Healthcare after the Referendum (Don't worry)

Postby scubydoo » Mon Jun 27, 2016 6:50 am

A lot of people are worried about this just remember that Spain and the UK reciprocal agreement long before the EU so it's not somethig to worry about. The UK is also full of Spanish who need healthcare.

I Have no idea but a relative lived in spain and although the health service was basic in those days the doctors saved his life and it was he who told me this was late 60s early 70s.

I think you will find that just like with France, the majority of people are semi or retired people that go to live in Spain/France and the young of Spain/France go to work in the UK, thereby paying for their health care through their work.

Time will tell and until the years of debates and discussions between UK and other EU countries are finalised, then and only then will this and other questions be truly known

I hope your right Scuby but can't imagine ANY government negotiating any non emergency medical cover. Someone will have to pay and that will probably be the retired. I'm afraid my trust in 'Beefy Boris' or IDS and Gove in Ex Pats future health here in Spain is sadly lacking.

If anything does change people should have plenty of notice given that actual leave date is over 2 years away & negotiations have yet to start. In the meantime nothing can be gained by panicking, worst case a contribution towards health costs maybe needed from someone - Government/individuals who knows at this stage.
I would advise don't worry until you know firm facts & continue to enjoy Spain in the meantime.

My husband and I were planning to retire to Spain next year. Now after Brexit one of our worries is the healthcare system. When we move we will both be receiving UK pension. We cannot afford to get expensive private healthcare as my husband has pre-existing health conditions. Not sure what to do now.

The new SIP cards are for everyone. They will be valid in whatever region of Spain you find yourself needing medical attention. It will have a unique number so they can identify you but may not be valid in Catalunya for the time being.
