Adopt a Podenco!

Adopt a Podenco!

Galgos and Podencos are Spanish hunting hounds - rather like Greyhounds. Sadly many of them are abandoned, hanged or otherwise hideously mistreated and as the hunting season has just ended many, many more are disposed of. Some 40,000 a year in Spain. They are the most adorable and beautiful dogs, with a gentle and very affectionate nature. There are a number of rescue organisations all over Spain, who are struggling desperately for funds and adoptees. So if you have room for a dog who will adore you to it's dying day - why not take a look. The local one here is Hope for Podencos at Torremendo. You'll find them on Facebook or by Googling them.
I can vouch for these wonderful animals as we have one - and she's the light of our lives.

Be aware that these dogs have a mind of there own ,do not take kindly to simple disapline , need a HUGE amount of exersize , you,ll be chaseing around the countryside trying to find the darn thing when it gets out [ and it will ] an if there is a bich on heat locally god help you ...........!!

If you are young and have loads of time to exersise and have a fence 12ft tall it may be for you , not i,m afraid for the older person ..!!!!

Be aware ? |Why <<<<<<<These dogs respond very easily to training ,What they will not do is respond to heavy handed disapline , A podenco regresses under that kind of treatment , These dogs make the most wonderful companions and any pods from us are neutered and castrated so a bitch in heat is no problem .They do like exercise but what dog doesnt thrive on that , You get different sizes of Podencos and we match the dog to the family so it is good for both of them , They are hunting dogs but most of the ones we pick up are either injured or abandoned by there owner as no good for hunting ,
Come and meet us and our podencos .We are at the Centro Rural de Algorfa the last Friday of every month where we hold a bring and buy and a raffle to raise funds The Podencos would love to see you We are Hope for Podencos

We have had a huge Podenco (Rough coated Majorcan 35k) for nearly 10 years and he is an absolute joy. He was abandoned at 6 months in the campo and found me walking my other dog who has since then sadly passed away.
Yes sure he has escaped a couple of times and returned only when almost on his knees. When a pup he chewed the irrigation pipes and occasionally took a book or whatever was laying around ... but ... I can tell you that compared to other pups I have looked after here in Spain he has been a breeze.
There is not a bad bone in him and is a truly gentle giant and all who meet him fall in love with him.
He is very obedient and I would trust him with everyone including kids.
He is not too good at going out so ... not a dog to take out for a coffee ... only because he was treated badly by the locals when roaming so in public he is very scared and I decided he is more comfortable in the house and garden ... we are lucky we have a large plot and he gets his walk twice a day on the lead so no big deal.
I would recommend a Podenco to anyone who has sense and doesn't expect the impossible ... like him turning tricks etc. They just want a loving owner who is kind and patient and realizes the bread and their needs. That would apply to any dog surely!
Only get a dog after thinking it through they like children need love, care patience and understanding ... but the rewards ... well unconditional love in bucket loads!!!

Is this based on personal experience? We have had whippets for many years, closely related to the podenco, and your opinion bears no similarity to our experience. We have found them to be gentle, loyal, obedient, intelligent and very easy to train. They are sprinters and do not need "a HUGE amount of exercise". Ours never escaped and our walls are no where near 12' tall. Any dog that is mistreated or not looked after properly will look to get away whenever possible, Still never let accuracy get in the way of a good story eh?
