1) we pay EUR 25 each a year for a debit card (just to take out our own money).
25 is quite expensive. Note the comments Jan made, though, on one card not working.
2) every two years we pay for non residents declarations. We should be able to halve that.
You would still have to pay for a non-resident certificate, I believe. Cheaper than the bank charges but you still have to declare non-residency status.
3) then there seems to be some incidentals.
On another point, we took out house insurance cover for about EUR270 with the bank. I got a much cheaper quote elsewhere but apparently I was supposed to give the bank 2 months notice. So if u shop around make sure u give the bank plenty of notice.
The law in Spain has recently been changed to only give one months notice to close an account for insurances etc. Always best to find the rules in a foreign country and not assume everywhere will be like UK.
As we do not have Sabadell credit cards, they are only using my money but I seem to be paying a lot of fees for the privelidge. I get excellent service from Sabadell but think it is worth the time to look at the costs and cut out unnecessary costs where you can.
In the U.K, I only pay a fee to Barclays of £11.50 per month to cover Car Breakdown, world wide medical cover and airline lounge passes. I do not pay for the use of debit or credit cards or any other fees.
Only £11.50 a month?
In UK you wouldn't be allowed to open a non resident account. Your fees are for being able to do so here in Spain. You are a resident in UK and you wouldn't get those fees if you were resident in Spain.
I hope this helps.

We bank with Sabadell. It's a non resident account and because we have our pension paid into it we get no charges whatsoever. Last month I noticed they credited interest to the account! ... we both have debit cards. The staff at Sabadell in Algorfa are friendly and helpful.

The translation of that titled bank charge is -
TICKET T. VISA ELE - would it be Interest for changing money or a charge for a Bank card ?

Hi Nikkinca, Hope you don't mind me asking but what's this account called?....and can you pay in from your UK bank instead of pension (we've not reached state pension age yet)?
We currently have a Sabadell non-resident joint account and pay a total of €96 per year (incl 1 debit card). We would be happy to arrange a regular money transfer from the UK to get free banking. We asked about the "Expansion account" but we were told you have to be resident.
Cheers.
Hi Trotter,
Out of interest - We were asked by Sabadell if we wanted to pay in a monthly sum and get no interest charged on our Sabadell account (We are non-residents) and we worked out that we would have to pay the UK banks charges for money transfer plus exchange rate. Halifax UK charge £9.50 per transfer plus the exchange rate is obviously slightly above the tourist rate. So although it depends on how much money is sent each month, we worked out that even if it only cost us only £10 per month (it would definitely be more though with the exchange rate) to send, it would still work out more than the fees charged (our fees are £97 per year with Sabadell).
Therefore we are happy to pay the fees for Sabadell and keep the account we have now.
The Non Resident certificate is charged by all banks and is approx every two years.

Hi Marcliff,
Reference your comment "The monthly pension payment deposit at Bankia is €200 a month" is this a minimum amount expected by this bank in order to receive either none or limited bank charges.

I expect you can generally, but if you are thinking about a no interest account, they only allow a no interest account set up if the payments are paid in monthly with direct debit, when they offered it to us - It can't be paid in piece-mill.

If it's a pension and you're a resident then yes.

I am non resident - just about to complete on a purchase in Quesada - we have a uk santander debit card - so free euro withdrawals from santander cash machines and we also have a santander zero credit card - no transaction fees in Europe.
So I only need / want a bank account for 2 utility payments and council tax - don't need any cards as happy to take cash in from time to time or make a transfer - so any suggestions as to the cheapest way to this and with which bank?

It just irritates me that I have to pay around 120 euros in bank fees to institutions that are inherently devious - to pay for very expensive standing charges for utility bills - that must earn the utility companies a huge amount of money on the costa's when people are not in their holiday homes - which in turn become much more expensive utility bills - but on a positive note - I am reliably informed - the sun shines
