Is it possible to open Spanish bank account in UK?

We have just come back from yet another great holiday in Quesada but this time we bought our own holiday home.
Does anyone know if it is possible to open a Spanish bank account from the UK. What with work, kids and another holiday we have already booked we are going to be pushed to get back over before completion.

If you paid a deposit to an Estate Agent or instructed a Solicitor they should be able to help you. You can't rush things in Spain. A lot different to the UK. That's why Power of Attorney is used a lot on House Sales.

Hi
Welcome to the forum!

It used to be that Barclays and Lloyds and Halifax had branches in Spain and then you could open the Spanish Bank account in the UK, which is what we did. However most of these banks have now been taken over in Spain by Spanish banks so not sure if you can actually open the account from the UK these days.

If you are near London you could try the try asking Solbank/Sabadell Bank if they can open one for you.
Solbank,
Sabadell House,
120 Pall Mall,
London SW1Y 5EA
Telephone +44 (0)20 7321 0020

There is also Santander Bank who are Spanish owned and there are lots of branches in the UK, you could also ask in there.

As Janjan says if you have your Solicitor/Abagado arranged they should help you with things like this. If you haven't got one yet, it's good to get one who has good communication in English and who answers promptly by email - There are lots of recommended ones on the forum and you can instruct from the UK, in fact it's good to do that as you then know how good they are at keeping in touch when you are in the UK.

We use Abaco (this is not an advert as there are plenty of other recommendations on the forum!) but we have been pleased with them and still use them as our Fiscal Representative, ten years after the house sale, to sort out our Non-residents tax. Here's an article below that may be of interest. They have a brilliant website with loads of info for house buying and more, so even if you don't use them, it's worth checking out their information pages. http://www.abacoadvisers.com/spain_expl ... ount-spain

You will need an NIE number or you will eventually need one for the house sale and these can be arranged in London at the Spanish embassy but it could take about 12 weeks, so depends on how long you have before you go back to Spain - Another thing you could ask your solicitor.

There's lots of helpful information on the forum about house buying procedures, just look on the home page for the relevant forum titles and have a read and ask questions if you can't see answers to what you need - We all like to pass on our experiences.

The consensus advice on here and everywhere is definitely try not to use a solicitor recommended by an estate agent. It is best to get your own solicitor. I would get out quick from that option and possibly say you will get back to them and get quotes from other solicitors. You can then see which one suits you best. Try not to be rushed into anything. It is so easy online to arrange a spanish solicitor yourself.

No I haven't heard of them and a search on this forum hasn't come up with anything about them.

The thing with using the Solicitor recommended by your Estate Agent is that it's a 'conflict of interest' - It may work out fine for some but it isn't generally advisable.

I found their website here http://www.javaloyes-suarez.com/ I imagine you've had a look around but hopefully you will get someone who knows them or can advise you further before you commit to them.

We were given a Solicitor from our agent but didn't use them for the same reason 'conflict of interest' and chose our own. We didn't even tell the agent and when we were at the completion stage they drove us to their Solicitor, on auto-pilot , and were quite surprised when we asked them to drive us to our own Solicitor.

I tried to open a Santander account here in Spain, stating that I already had an account with them in the UK and they told me that it had no bearing on the situation because the two bank are completely separate and share only a name, so I think you'll probably get the same problem in the UK try to do it the other way around. Anyway, my solicitor Silvia Galve from SGM Abogados in Benijofar arranged a new account at La Caixa (Barclays at the time) for a friend of mine when he bought and did it over email. He only signed everything when he came to Spain to complete. If you need a solicitor and a bank account without coming back to Spain any time soon then give Silvia a call and she will definitely be able to help. You can see them onlline at www.sgmlegalspain.com or call on (0034)965724871. Sorry, I don't have a direct dial number..
