Lloyds bank (formerly Halifax) in Spain

[quote="Sandra"]Very Perflexed!!

Have just been using the Santander on-line banking facility! I got my 123 card with the sole purpose of no charges on withdrawal. I didn't receive any charges in September, when I was out there, but the website says that it will make charges for withdrawing money, but the leaflet on the 123 card says "We won't charge you when you use your debit card to withdraw cash at any Santander cash machine in the UK or Spain". Oh, for plain English!!

Could this be the new rules coming into Santander as well Sandra?. Our new charges have only just happened and as Spain is in such a financial turmoil all banks may start charging for Debit card withdrawals.
If only one bank did it then they would be taking the risk of losing custom to other banks but with all banks doing the same that wouldn't happen. It would certainly boost the banks' profits, even if we don't like it.

I send money online to my Spanish banks from my HSBC account. They charge 9 Euros for any amount.
I also pay my mortgage each month via Currencies Direct, also without charge.
As far as having money to spend whilst in Spain, remember "Cash is King". We never use a card when in Spain.

Hi Rob,

We also use cash too but like to use the Spanish bank debit card to get the cash from the machines in Spain. I personally wouldn't feel safe bringing a high amount of cash in euros to Spain and prefer to carry relatively small amounts around with us.

We also have an HSBC current account but found our Halifax uk account to Halifax/Lloyds in Spain has been the best way to transfer money online to Spain, as it's free.

The only annoying thing is the new charge from being free to a whopping 4% that has just been put on the Debit card withdrawals by Halifax/Lloyds in Spain. :cry:

Edited 08/07/2013 - The ATM charge above did not happen - We always use 'Servired' ATM's and everything has stayed the same - No charges! We are still pleased with our Halifax/Lloyds accounts for transferring from UK to Spain and for cash withdrawals.

===============================

I send regular amounts to my Solbank in Spain, via their London offices - free of charge.

I don't like to carry much cash around with me, so I am inclined to use a card. You hear so many horror/robbery tales - not sure what the actual numbers are though!! I certainly wouldn't be without a house safe though!

We're with Lloyds International Jan and haven't had notification - YET!!! Must say, we only use ATMs as a last resort and Mally is so frugal - we have no need for last resorts. I am like a minor royal and carry no money or is it because I do not get given any.

Do you pay everything by Credit Card then? We use Credit Cards for car-hire and large Supermarket shops but cash for meals/drinks out and smaller everyday shopping and it soon mounts up.

Hi Everyone,

Just an update on the Halifax / Lloyds / Sabadell transfer.

We are still using Lloyds (formerly Halifax) for all our cash withdrawals (in "Servired" specified ATM's) and transfers without any charges and have been informed by the bank that this will not change for the foreseeable future without notice.

We still transfer monies from our Halifax UK bank to our Lloyds (formerly Halifax) in Spain, without charge and everything has stayed the same so far.

We are very pleased with this service and hope that the new 'take-over' does not change it too much.

Jan.

Guapa wrote:We find the low rate for transferring funds from our Halifax uk a/c to our Lloyds a/c in Guardamar unacceptable. We have used XE.com for a couple of years now, we get a great rate.

The rate you get is not the rate on its home page - don't get over excited - but there is no minimum, no transfer charges, no commission. Needs setting up for security then it is so simple, my husband says it is the easiest one he has used. Once you have it set up you can check rate you get easily.

Regarding the Sabadell takeover I think it will be expensive. From what I have heard those who were with other banks it has taken over aren't best pleased with charges & are looking to change banks.

Thanks Guapa. It's helpful to have a recommended alternative for if, or more likely 'when', Sabadell decide to start charging those of us customers who have come as part of the sell-off package by Lloyds. As soon as we get wind of it, we will be off - Just hope it's not a long-winded process like cancelling our Spanish house insurance was. Not being permanent in Spain didn't help when they would only accept 'snail mail' hard copies of letters to cancel...and then a minimum of three months notice or they say they can take the next years premium with possibly no refund!! That was hard work! Hope it's easier than that to change banks. LOL
