Providing proof of tax residency

Providing proof of tax residency

Postby najizan123 » Sun Jan 07, 2018 3:36 pm

My bank (Sabadell) has sent a letter me asking that we provide them with information to clarify that we are tax resident outside of Spain, and says that we should visit our branch as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, we're not out in Spain again until April, but I wondered if anyone else has had such a letter, and if so, what documentation was required as proof.

I'm awaiting a call from the bank, but just thought I'd ask!!!

its just spain and the uk tax services cross referencing everyone with accounts in both countries, to see what tax is being paid where, underpaid or overpaid, and more importantly to the tax system, who is avoiding paying tax, by having money placed across borders. straight forward request, unless you are dodgy, lol. your UK NI number is usually all that is required.

We're also with Sabadell and had a similar request a few months ago. I just gave them our NI numbers via their mobile app as we were in the UK at the time and that seems to suffice.

Have you received a similar request from your UK bank? I had the same with Lloyds and gave them my NIE and my Spanish tax registration number. When Sabadell asked for the same info, I gave them my UK National Insurance number.

Some people have mistakenly thought this is to do with money laundering; in fact, it's to prevent tax evasion. The EU adopted the US's FATCA regulations in 2015, and the tax authorities in each of the EU member states then passed responsibility for collecting the information to financial institutions, hence the letters we're all now receiving from our banks.

Yes, my UK bank asked for proof of my resident status in Spain about 6 months ago. They asked for a certified copy (signed by my bank) that I was tax resident here and also a copy of the passport of the country in which I was claiming to be resident, ie Spain.
Obviously impossible so I just sent my NIE number and a copy of my UK passport (Not certified) and heard nothing since.
