Alternative to 'Word' on computer?

I have just got a new laptop.. it has few programs on it so I need a free alternative to Word. I don´t use it much so don´t want to spend hundreds of euros on a Word type program..I used to use Open Office, but for some reason it won´t download and says there is a error..

The Laptop comes with Polaris but that is not so good. Does anyone know of another free program??

I would recommend open office but see there is a problem, have you tried downloading it using Google Chrome?

The other alternative is to use Google Docs, there is an offline version you can download.

I am using Chrome at the moment.. I am using the Apache website to download from but the download keeps sticking and then shows an error..

I didn´t know that Google Docs has an offline version, I´ll give it a try..

I use Libre Office for all my documents and spreadsheets. It's free to download and you can save the files with the .doc and .xls file extensions so that it can be read by people using Word.

Windows "word-pad" is a decent free and should already be installed with windows. Very simple and not many features but gets the job done.

I use WPS from Kingston Office full suite of 3 progs inc words,spreadsheet and presentations all fully compatible and free
