Android box

@FuzzyGirl. The problem is that I am unwilling to pay €20-€25 a month for tv. I dont watch much tv (although husband is a tv freak) and I much prefer to pay slightly more to have a decent internet connection and speed.

I agree proper hosted servers are probably the best way yo go long term, but we have only just bought our apartment and havent finished furnishing it yet so arent in a position to rent it out to recoup some of the costs.

We already have UK freeview included in our community fees, but both of us like watching premiership football and Formula 1, so I am hoping an android box will suffice at least for now.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Or use card sharing - a mix of your existing system (community satellite free to air) and also with the box connecting to the internet.

Using a 3rd party provider can be used with specific satellite receivers, to unlock all of Sky in standard definition. This gives you the Sky without the buffering - though can still get odd glitch on odd - cost around €50-€100 a year for the service, if you have a compatible satellite receiver (if you have model I can check).

We don't offer the service directly - but know the set up of all of this type of equipment. This would work out subscription wise half or less of the hosted IPTV services, but should be more stable still than Kodi (on sports).

Card sharing is hit and miss when football is on, we had to change to another system which works well ..

Hi agree with all the comments, android boxes are very good provided you have sufficient internet speed + they have loads of channels for sports & much much more. If you look on You Tube there is guidance on how to use them, what things to add etc.etc., I would suggest that if you are ordering a preloaded box its worth checking what you have as you may find you have lots of stuff you don't need that can be deleted & others that need updating.
As long as you have MOBDRO, FilmON, UKTVNow + KODI & Showbox for films/TV box sets you will be fine.
When you are out here you are most welcome to have a look at mine if it helps.

Many thanks Glosman for both the information and the offer. I may well take you up on that :D .

Can I ask what internet speed you are running yours on?

This will depend on the service provider - it is true that if a lot of loading you do get brief freezes, though this is not with all service providers - goes back to the hosting again, the provider themselves. Again a decent hosted system, you don't get this, but an average on or have a slow ping internet speed & you can expect to see this (moreso on live sports, which is always heavy loading).

Ultimately though - in the real world you are paying a fraction of the cost for an unofficial system - so to expect it to be identical to Sky is optimistic. Even more so on a freely hosted system running on indie apps....Expectations?

I'm still not entirely sure why people recommend Kodi for sports as I found it not to be as stable to a level that I would find acceptable, however resources do chop and change - nature of the beast. Last time I tried to watch a world boxing title fight, I failed miserably on Kodi with the streams stopping & ended up missing half the fight - which is why for me, for this type of application (live sports) I find hard to recommend.

As an aside - I have 6 Kodi boxes on the side awaiting updates for clients that need assistance updating, which is the only hardware that a reasonable percentage of clients struggle updating. Just bear in mind if you are a technophobe, impatient or simplicity (or stability & quality) is on top your wish list, you may wish to review other options.

I agree totally with glosman. I gave an android box, and there very many sellers of same around here, and I get all sky sports channels and other sky channels via modbro and all movies inc box sets, tv old and current, you tube plus Google, and your email if you wish, via kodi
I regularly watch live football with no difference in image etc to normal tv
There are some here who will try to get you away from android and on to subscription based mag boxes.
I watch recent release movies most times without buffering and can live with that
I bought an android box to be subscription free and I am, and I'm sure you will be too, very happy with the android box

Hi JillandSteve, that is very reassuring to know, thank you. That is the way I am going to go. If we can put up with a Kodi loaded firestick in the UK I am sure we can live with the occasional glitch of an android box in Spain.

Hi Paul, while I appreciate what you are saying about the stability of subscription services, we really cant justify the expense at least until we get our apartment established on the rental market. Particularly as we overspent our budget on buying the place. I have read many of the articles on your company website and will continue to value it's input but I think for now we will see how we manage with an android box.

Image quality is not same as normal or Sky / satellite - or the better subscriptions services, have all the systems and there is quite a degree in differences. Kodi streams are from different resources - anything from HD to grainy smear CAM quality.

I have been using XBMC / Kodi for years - part of my work, testing and setting up new equipment. Stability is simply not 100% (quite far from it) and you will not get every sporting event (or anything that matter) without odd problems, this includes buffering & missing streams. We have probably sold in excess of a couple of thousand boxes over the years, so I know only too well the support and issues with these systems. You do get people happy with them, but you do also get more instability and require more support than any other available TV service. We do not recommend to clients looking for good or stable sports, based on our experiences and feedback.

You are also reliant on apps - So you can get sports on Mobdro - this was taken out of service for 3-4 weeks around 6 months ago. Navi-x before that, last year - popular for sports, taken offline, re-appeared a few months later....This is the point I am trying to get across - you can have periods where ok, then you get a bout of issues with instability or your favourite app getting a legal notice and taken down...forcing you to then go and search for another app, that contains your football channel or stream. It is not always straightforward. Or an app which decides it doesn't like your version of Kodi and then Filmon stops working - which it did 2 weeks ago for many people and again a few people were without TV while they update their boxes (which is why I have 6 boxes here to update still).

I deal with people often who struggle with basic technical type services and find themselves stuck with using and updating Kodi. You can take that as trying to recommend MAG or subscription services over android - which I am, simply because they work better, have all the facilities, catch up on a lot of channels and and give you much less aggro - night & day....

We offer all the systems / services. I have the back end of client support of a 3000 + support facebook page + website, my opinions are simply based on a fair amount of customer feedback and my own experience in reviewing and fixing these type of systems.

Unlike some of the cowboys / illegal workers in the local newspapers - rather than make unrealistic claims - buy a cheap android box, watch every football game until the day you die & in full HD....many of these type of claims / adverts are very much exaggerated or over hyped. I have lost count of the amount of people that have purchased an item with the belief it will deliver as promised, when the reality is they feel either disappointed or ripped off.

Code: Select all

That's fair enough. Not suitable for rental apartment though - you'll see when you use. Problem is if someone alters or resets a setting within Kodi, not a simple fix and someone will need to rebuild. Fine for personal. All rental companies we supply (mainly in Malaga / Marbella) use MAG / AURA type services which are locked down and boxes simple to use, more suitable for 'walking / curious fingers' type applications - IE much easier to use and a lot harder to mess up !

Ultimately it does come down to personal experience and use - I see no reason that if you watch a few games and all ok, why you wouldn't be happy (with Kodi) - it's just my experience over a longer period, stability is not there and frustration / problems start. Better for a secondary (or light use) system, rather than a main one.
