OK - Dreambox or the REAL Dreambox is a satellite receiver, which previously had been designed to used for card sharing - aka cheap Sky. For satellite systems. Linux is just a programming language and is used in some of these programmable receivers.
To add to confusion, there may be some other products also borrowed the name 'Dreambox' so it might NOT be a satellite receiver, could be an Android box or something else - so initially was just trying to ascertain 100% what equipment we are dealing with, in order to give best advice. Generally receivers don't get viruses, so wondered if something else, or just a software/application type issue.

Funnily enough I just stumbled across an old post & saw mention of Dream box and Catral and realised it was probably not a real Dreambox, but someone ripping off the name/brand.
There is no lifespan on Android boxes as such - though the older they get, the slower etc - however, it is likely that it has been used as a Kodi box, which is about as reliable as errmm, not reliable Issue is, you can get the box rebuilt, new version of Kodi, download all new apps, re configure - yes it is possible. Is it worth it, IMO no. We stopped supplying this type of hardware a couple of years ago as found Kodi was getting more and more unstable, apps falling over, streams unreliable, frankly a minefield of support related aggravation.
The problems were streams oversubscribed (leading to instability) apps getting legal notices and taken down. No real support as the content is free, so if a problem, tough luck, no support as you are not paying for.
You can find someone to rebuild, or rebuild yourself (lots of youtube guides - Install Kodi), however for us, more trouble than its' worth, can't offer support and simply put, we do not rate as a good enough standard to supply ourselves - forever problems.
Some local no doubt could do for you as well, but you won't get anything other than a secondary service, which won't be that solid/stable and even if rebuilt, won't be 5 minutes before something else crops up - which is why we give a wide berth now, you can do cheap, but this is the cheapest of the cheap, expect the same service wise - more time faffing around than watching the TV!
SO better FTA for satellite, or if you want a proper IPTV service, there is newer and easier to use hardware and services which are much better to use, no apps or messing around, integrated much like Sky/Freesat - downside? you pay a modest monthly fee for your premium content.

Sammy - an app is an app, it is probably an app WITHIN Kodi, most are - but even if not, same rules apply for this type of 'free stuff'.
We have 3500+ followers on facebook and use this as a measuring tool for response & cutomer feedback. This indicates another story. I have to go with the masses as well as my own personal experiences of 4+ years of suffering the support of dealing with Kodi & these type of apps.
Any half competent youtuber can figure this out - the issue will always be the same. It is all very well putting a new 'app' on the box, which for NOW works (here's the but) - the problem is a number of things. 1.We have seen multiple apps receive legal notice and be taken down 2. Content on app if become more popular gets overused, hosting bandwidth is not unlimited so streams get less and less reliable. This is a constant issue I have seen through a few years and it has been getting overall, progessively worse. 3. None of the streams or channels can be guaranteed, as they are no being paid for, so you have no right or control over them - can go as quickly as they appear.
So for 5 minutes, or while all works, people say 'im happy' - the problem is, it doesn't last. As I said i've dealt with 100's personally on this over 4+ years and it is at best a secondary option, complicated to maintain and no one can guarantee any consistency. Factor in, it's user-unfriendly in comparison with other solutions - there really is quite a big difference in the functionality of software/hardware as well.
We also have to take into account peoples level of technical competence. Some are younger and technically minded, others simply cannot cope easily with this type of hardware/software as is not really 'home user' is more 'home hobbyist', so technophobes or those who want simple/solid it causes difficulty for. Otherwise we would still not be getting calls and emails - 'can you rebuild my Kodi box please'?
I do get it - people want cheap and free is even better, but in the real world, you want the job doing well/properly you pay appropriately - i've used all the systems and am tasked with support and testing new hardware/software & know full well all the tricks and cheats for getting free stuff - but at the end of it all, the shortcuts rarely work out in the end & people end up upgrading at some point due to frustration - i'd estimate this is the case already with 80-90% of Kodi users if we go back 2-3 years.
There are some people out there that love getting things for free and are prepared to accept this type of compromise, overall I would say this is not the case for the majority of people. When you've seen 100's of emails of support on Kodi/Android, your views may change a little
