Sorry to hi-jack your post Ron, but I have a question for Pete....
We have a community satellite dish which is tuned to UK channels, do I need to get a Freesat box to use it or can I just plug the lead from the dish to the apartmernt straight into the tv? It wont be smart tv. Thanks Trina

No doubt Pete will reply Trina but in my case here on Entre Naranjos the feed from the comm sat goes straight to the TV

As he's not replied and i'm a technician...Will depend on the TV - most TV's do not have an inbuilt satellite receiver (DVBS'-2) only some of the smart TV's - also be warned the inbuilt tuners on the TV's are far more basic than a dedicated satellite receiver - some lack even basic functions such as a timer for recording - check before buying!
If TV does not have DVB-S/2 satellite tuner inbuilt, then separate set top box required - lots of different options and prices, depends on features.

That's odd, I did actually reply, asking Trina too post a photo of the plug of the end of the cable, to ensure that it was an F connector, but it seems that my reply didn't get posted.
The original poster said in a PM that he doesn't have a sat box and that the connection from the urbanisation connects directly to the aerial socket of his TV. I took this to mean that the urbanisation is doing some sort of RF modulation of the various channels, but as he has a smart TV I guess it could be one that has a built-in satellite tuner.
Pete.

I can see your logic on this one - does initially sound like could be an older type cable / RF system. There are a few in villa martin and surrounding we have reviewed, which would be best ripped out and started again...In fact some of these older cable systems are so bad that half the community has since put up their own dishes....That aside - it is difficult to know as we have both stated the TV could have a sat tuner inbuilt - so at this point could be either cable or satellite system!
Back to the original point of the Hard Disc recorder - in order to establish whether this type of hardware (or which specific recording device) is suitable for the system - we need to know what the system is in the first place - we know with a satellite type system / receiver and smart TV you can just use a standard hard drive or USB stick - but for some of these cable systems the formats are not compatible with the recording drives. A safe answer would be do review a device which is designed to record any live video output - so it won't matter what system is being used.

I bought a USB stick and the tv records to that no problem and the tv also has built in timer record functions and time shift recording etc which I can use. I was hoping to find a hard disc storage device rather than a USB stick but one which would also let me perform the record/playback function as the inbuilt ones are a bit cumbersome to use. Looks like it'll have to be a removable hard drive for storage and persevere with the TVs inbuilt record/playback function. all for your help

Ron
Why can't you just plug in a hard drive into the TV - rather than a USB stick? USB sticks by nature are not as stable or reliable as hard drive, they tend to corrupt over time - we buy and throw them away all day long, they don't always like being continually pulled in and out of different devices.
Ideally - for reliability - dedicate the storage device - USB stick / ext hard drive to the TV only. It is better to do that then try to use an external HDD with TV and a PC as they may not be 100% cross compatible and could be some file corruption, when moving between devices - plug into TV - leave alone! 2.5 portable drive should do the trick.
A 1gb portable hard drive or similar should give you more storage than you are likely to need recording wise. I have a 500gb Sky box and it has never had more than 1/3rd to 1/2 used.

Yes a HD fine for storage but I'm looking for better recording options than I can get with the TV for example using the TV controls I can't record 1 channel while watching another
