I use a Humax Freesat box onto which you can record directly without the need to have an external hard drive
plus it gives you the facility to pause live TV too
Works in a very similar manner to a Sky Plus box

A hard disc recorder is usually a stand alone recording device with built in hard drive, i think you are referring to an External Hard Drive which is a storage device that you connect to your Sat box, one that has facility to download TV content to the External Hard Drive, such as the popular Humax Freesat box. NOT FREEVIEW, that is different.
I buy from Amazon, but for speed of purchase go to Carrefour, i would recommend, Western Digital W/D, or Seagate.

Western Digital 1Tb external hard drive for about £50 plus postage on Amazon. Same model is €59 in Media Markt at Zenia Boulevard.
Seagate 1Tb on Amazon is £54.99 and €58 at Media Markt.
Can't connect to Carrefour site for some reason.

The built in "freeview", or TDT in Spain, will only get you the Spanish channels. The boxes I've mentioned plug directly into the USB socket and don't need a separate electric supply. You also have to ensure the Spanish channel is set to English or it will record in Spanish.
For the Spanish channels, I use a DVD recorder with built in hard disk drive. That way I can set them to record in the early hours of the morning and edit out the adverts before watching. As an aside, I recorded a series last night (the old Bones one) from 10pm to 0330am. The programme was on for all of 10 minutes before they had a 25 minute ad break. 5 and half hours of recording for 3 hours of actual viewing time.

Hi Ron,
As others have said, built-in Freeview will not work in Spain, it is a trestrial system and the signals broadcast in the UK do not reach Spain.
TDT is the Spanish equivalent of Freeview but only gives Spanish channels, some of which I believe are available with English audio.
FreeSat is available in Spain, and gives you English language channels, but this is totally different technology to Freeview and requires a satellite dish and receiver (which your urbanisation may supply).
If you could describe your current equipment in detail, including info on any boxes that you're using to get the channels you wish to record, we'll be able to advise you on the best solution. Otherwise, you'll keep being bombarded with misinformation.
Pete.

Hi Ron, I agree with Trotter, the Samsung is a great piece of equipment for recording and playback, I have the 2TB one, and I recently got a 3 TB for my mate as we use them on the "dodgy sky boxes"
