Issue is Kodi. Totally unmonitored, not hosted, too many people jump on streams = unstable. The last recommendation for stable TV sports. Cheapest.....So expect the best Sorry.
Guarantees for stable live sports cannot be given when hosted freely and the servers they are on get overloaded. Then a load of chasing around looking for alternative stream. App hopping, promises of every football game...not without a lot of aggro. Same goes for app mentioned above - it is a stream scraper like most of them and too many people jump on the stream and it will not matter what app you use. Kodi.
We generally state Kodi - ok for a bit of basic free TV, additional films etc - but for approaching a "Sky like experience'? or for sports (or high quality FTA TV) - can be really quite difficult at times, both in use and stability. It is free for a reason. No one gave you a free Rolls Royce, so don't expect similar performance - although part of issue is expectation levels. To be fair some illegally working clowns locally pretending to be TV companies, market or sell very average hardware at best for this purpose (for sports) and frankly is not up to scratch. Not just locally, some of the marketing on these Kodi or free sub boxes is exaggerated to say the least. They simply are often overhyped on the promises. We get is all the time, calls off people with Kodi.
I've used XBMC / Kodi for years (need to for support) and myself personally have all but given up on it, as simply a waste of my time, just such a pain. Too much faffing around, almost AS MUCH TIME FINDING TV CONTENT AS WATCHING IT . Sports wise I did once try to watch a boxing world title fight and had such a nightmare with streams on and off - I decided not path of sports for me and verified by many customers back to us when they have had issues with (usually football on various Kodi boxes, with different apps over the years) - would not feel generally comfortable recommending for sports as trouble / instability will be an issue at some point.
If sports / stability important - worth reviewing different type of IPTV service, one designed to be simpler, more stable without the need for apps / software updates / streams - simple & a hosted type solution, with easier to use hardware. https://tvtech.sharepoint.com/Pages/IPT ... ision.aspx
Summary, difficult to give recommendation for any type of long term sports add on for Kodi (we do sell Kodi boxes, so not biased - just do not agree they are a good solution for live sports or best ease of use stability overall). With Kodi most do go through issues of instability & this is before we review that the streams being shared many are card share (in the main on kodi) and these are currently being hacked about a little by Sky too...we may see another application or two get a legal notice from Sky.

Don't even think about paying monthly "subs" for any tv now !!
there are plenty of addons and as mentioned Mobdro to keep "most" people happy most of the time
if you want football there are problems as Paul suggested, but alot of people don't just watch the footy on tv
and as above, its all availble for FREEEEEEE except the internet costs of course which most people have.

Jabberwocky - have you tried a real service? You simply cannot compare the two.
We do sell (Kodi) and I offer support on this device. I am hoping we stop selling this product shortly as simply to resource heavy in terms of support needed.
Kodi is free, but its pretty poor. Or certainly at times. I know I monitor support on a facebook page with 3600 people who frequently need support.
I think there will always be 'Free' vs 'Paid' brigade - of course people want different things. Those who want simple, working and stable will pay ( a reasonable) amount for it. Those who want to advocate cheap and free, enjoy.
As a statement of fact that a high percentage of Kodi users end up further down the line on subscription services. As time marches on, they simply get fed up with the apps, searching endlessly and stability. Everyone likes the idea of free, but it doesn't work as well on IPTV as satellite & if you want something close to a standard Sky / Freesat type interface, facilities then subscription.
If anyone has used free vs a decent hosted service - you would pretty quickly realise they are very different. As a back up for a little extra content or for basic filmon, then Kodi fine. They are literally miles apart both in operation and stability.
In 10 years or more of offering technical support on a lot of different devices / system - I can honestly say I have never seen so much support or advice needed as with Kodi - 10 times or more than anything i've seen before. This tells me it is simply not suitable for the average user and the level of issues with this type of service.
Just don't expect a Rolls Royce for free, as you won't get it If you hate technical devices, kodi is the most complex of all TV systems. Home hobbyist, not really commercially designed for the average user - though free is clearly enticing which is why many use them and also why a huge amount of people soon realise may not be quite what they thought initially.
Recommendations are fine - but users are different, we are not all IT people or technically minded, this should be taken into consideration. For every Kodi recommendation on a forum, I have 10 posts going how do I / why is my football never stable & why is this not working today.
Personally had enough of Kodi - Sky are all over them anyway, so I think we are due trouble shortly as lots of noise in the press - suspect an app or two may get a legal notice.
So in summary Free is what it is. One thing it is not, is the best. It is as statement of fact, the worst. Which is also why it is the cheapest. What else would you expect
If you want free UK TV and not bothered about Sky / sports - then a satellite dish is still the way to go. Stable, best picture quality, no reliance on the internet. If you want a few extra films, then use a cheap Kodi box as an add on.

Well written Paul and I totally agree with your comments above, But I for one will never pay for TV again,
unless of course the powers that be, switch off all content online which I doubt very much, certainly not in the near future.
As most of the "developers" will always find away................

There is always ways - i'll bet you in 3 months i'll be watching on my new smartwatch which is half hacked
Someone pays for my telly, so.... would I pay Sky's prices for the 'full monty', no - but I would & do pay for the discovery type channels / basic package and I do have a Sky subscription, amongst other things.
Also i'm rarely ever around at the same time, so IPTV wise, the sub type catch up services appeal more to me - though again, not as if i'm paying - would I, yes but not more than €20-€30 for a premium service, to me TV is not worth more than that - I am not a massive football watcher so 4K S Sports HD is not necessary.
Ultimately horses for courses - which is why we can celebrate all being so wonderfully different.

I pay. Happily, I just want it to work when I finally get the chance to sit down and unwind and watch something, as long as it's not sport...

Agreed, maybe my patience is running out and maybe i've fiddled with one technical item one too many times, with work. It is quite simple in my mind, turn it on and it should work. End of. I have no objection for paying for a service and to save a load of time and aggro. There's a limit of course - I would not spend £100 per month on Sky or any TV service, which many do in the UK, however as with all things there is a balance and the IPTV costs here are not anywhere near £100 per month / Skys costs.
You can drive costs down to a minimum, but ultimately the cheaper you go with any of these type of services, the more you compromise.
For me - same as, i'm busy - so when I do finally sit down to watch TV, I am tired, I do not want to do any of my own technical support. Turn on and watch.

The problem with sat dish services Paul is if you live in a downstairs apartment you can't erect the dish so options become limited generally my kodi and modbro work fine through my fibre optic internet which has a max 50mb download. It's the kodi add ons that become a problem not downloading properly or missing repo files
