roxybaby wrote:That's correct Ken, you will not be able to record unless you subscribe. In the UK sky are offering their basic package with a free 32" Tv for 20pounds. You might be better buying a Freesat recorder box,you will get the same FREE channels as you would with a non subscription sky box but there is no subscription.

Thank you Roxybaby.
I have come to the same conclusion, that is, buy a twin tuner freesat .pvr.
I live in Quesada. Can you please suggest a shop that I could go to that sells theses machines or a company that I could contact. We only want Freesat channels.
Thanks again for your advise.

I've got Superbeam and would highly recommend it. Funny "Paul TV Techie" you constantly rip on the re-broadcasters in the area, and you yourself flog the online equivalent of rebroadcasting! I agree Superbeam/Torresat are not for everyone - but many people, including myself find the service perfect for their needs.

Considering not so long ago Superbeam were offline for over 2 weeks with people screaming from the roof tops, there are many that were not so happy. They are also under legal investigation and have been for quite some time and have even managed to relocate to avoid prosecution for now. We do not host any such service in a comparable manner to themselves, in fact we do not host any service. Key point legally. Hosting.

While i'm at it i'm at it SB treat people not too well. We have a technician who was temporarily employed to realign antennas when they did have problems. They offered to pay him €5 euros per realignment & he had to pay his own fuel. When he queried this amount, they told him they would book jobs all close together, which was not the case. Upshot of it he spent most of the day running around for €25 euros and no doubt half of that went in fuel. When he complained of less than minimum wage, he was told there are plenty of others desperate enough. Nice people.

No I do not like the rebroadcasters, some of these companies are owned / part owned by local politicians, who use their influence to circumnavigate most laws and tax, while they make fortunes of ex pats and would appear can't or won't pay their staff fairly.

The ex counsellor of O/Costa owner of Ole, got caught a couple of years ago digging up 6km's of roads to put in a fibre optic system, for which they had no permission at the time. What what happen if you or I dug up 6km's of streets? Jail. What happened in OC? All went quiet for a couple of years and then guess what Ole putting in fibre. Corruption and hardly fair business practises for those companies that have to obtain licenses etc.

I suspect many people have not seen / reviewed newer options of TV services, which offer a lot more features and content than the SB or older rebroadcasting equivalent.

Times have moved on a little. Rebroadcasting is 20+ year old technology & pretty basic - newer services do offer a lot more for same money. Just stating a fact. New services have facilities such as catch up on all main channels (never miss a program), video on demand (films / series ready to watch when you want) and far more channels overall. In some instances 10 x the overall content for same monthly money.

I suspect the only reason why these companies are still in business is in some locations still here infrastructure is poor and internet not as good / stable as it could be. As time moves on the rebroadcasters will come under more and more pressure as other services simply offer more for the money.

Ken - Freesat is a UK only brand, it is not officially sold anywhere else other than the UK. Whilst you can possibly find someone who is reselling here, costs will be more than the UK & there will be no warranty (UK only). Probably the best option is to purchase online - eBay / amazon and get shipped over - simple enough to set up yourself as they have a wizard guide for self install.

No it is not Freddo - Sky is Sky & Freesat is well Freesat. To record on satellite without a Sky box / card or subscription, needs either a Freesat box (must be Freesat branded) or a free to air receiver which is USB PVR - can record externally via USB.

Simplest solution for twin tuner recording, is UK Freesat box - such as Humax (example).

Freesat from Sky

Sky doesn't go out of its way to advertise its free digital TV service. Why would it? It wants new customers to sign up to one of its monthly subscription TV packages instead.

But the option is there and, like the full-fat Sky Digital service, Freesat From Sky requires a satellite dish, a Sky digibox and a viewing card. The full package (including installation) will set you back £146.81.

There are cheaper options. If you're an ex-Sky subscriber (i.e. you already have a dish, an old Sky digibox and have previously been a customer for 12 months or more), then all you need to watch Freesat From Sky is your old viewing card.

If you've got a satellite dish, but no digibox, you can usually unearth some old Sky hardware on eBay. Say £30 for an unwanted Sky+ box, £20 for the viewing card and you're good to go.

It's worth noting that while you can use a Sky+ box to watch Freesat From Sky, none of the clever PVR functionality will work unless you cough up £10 per month to Sky. The Sky+ subscription is free to Sky Digital subscribers.

Other than that, Freesat From Sky gives you access to 240 TV channels and 85 digital radio stations without a monthly subscription. It's a wider choice than Freesat, but there's no access to any free high definition channels currently broadcasting unless you install a Sky HD box.

Again, none of the Sky+ functionality will work on a Sky's HD hardware unless you pay £10 per month or become a Sky Digital subscriber. A Sky HD subscription, giving you access to 15 HD channels and on-demand programming, will cost an extra £15 per month.

Summary: An ideal choice if you're a Sky subscriber who's looking to ditch their monthly subscription. Find out more at freesatfromsky.co.uk

You can purchase a Humax freesat box from Amazon.co.uk.

I assume they will deliver to Spain. They delivered mine to Belgium.

Freddo - Sky still wants to make you pay. This is not the way to go about it - if you use a Freesat box and forget Sky altogether, then you don't have to pay them or anyone £10 per month. It's a con - they want £120 per year to unlock the recording facility. Naughty.

Sorry if this seems a daft question. So if I buy a Freesat or Sky+ box on ebay in the UK and bring it with me to Spain, I just plug it into the tv with the hdmi lead and plug into the satellite dish and I get the UK freeview channels with no subscription?

We are in the process of buying an apartment in Ciudad Quesada so it is all a bit new to us.

thanks
