Cycle routes - Quesada & Surrounding areas

Benimar & Rojales (under 30 mins - cycled leisurely)
Below is an update on the cycle route we use for Benimar & Rojales (under 30 mins - cycled leisurely). This route misses out the main road from Quesada to Benijofar which goes into Benimar and is on quiet roads with minimal traffic :

Go up the 'Mini Golf' road (Los Arcos ) where the Cycological shop is. At the end where the 'Mini Golf' bar is, cut across the small piece of waste land facing you. There will be small cross-road in front of you. At this cross-road 'Calle Alicante' / 'La Coruna' go straight on down the road 'La Coruna'.

Take the third turning on the right called 'Calle Oviedo' (you will see the large Mercadona sign in front of you and before this right turn, on your left, will be the rear of a big grey warehouse type building which is a Chinese Bazaar)

At first cross-road where Calle Oviedo meets Calle Almeria, turn left into Calle Almeria.

Then go all the way down to the T junction at the end and turn right. Continue on all the way to the end of this road (It is an easy cycle as the road is mostly flat.)

When you get to the end, you will be at a sort of T junction but to stop cars getting through there's a high kerb stone. In front of you will be some villas and the one facing you is called 'Villa Tesoro'. You have to walk the bike over this curb stone and then turn left and go straight on, up a slight incline (There's no road-sign here but it is called 'Rio Tajo').

Keep going straight ahead, past some waste land on your right with an electric pylon in the middle. This road then curves slightly left although it is still 'Rio Tajo'.

You will then see ahead of you a long hill going down (this bit is really fun, as it's possible to carefully free-wheel all the way down to the bottom. However, coming back this hill will appear daunting to us less energetic bikers. However, it is easier than it looks and can be tackled with a combination of walking & gentle cycling.)

Keep going all the way down - The road changes to 'Agua Marina' in the middle.

When you get to the bottom of this hill at the end of the road, you can turn left for Benimar.

For Rojales turn right - Cycle along a little way until you see the Rojales cemetery in front of you. Then take the left hand road into the Avenida de la Constitucion which runs through the centre of Rojales - It is best to walk the bike down this road as it's a very steep downward slope (one way street) and leads straight into Rojales main road. For Guardamar follow on from the cycle route by Cyclogical.

There are other routes to Benimar & Rojales but we use this route to avoid main road traffic. Often this route to Benimar can be almost traffic-free as it passes through quiet residential areas.

You're welcome Alison. I like the forum to stay on top of what is going on around the area as there is so much out-of-date info. on the net. With the help of our members we are hoping to keep everything as current and relevant as possible.

Here's a couple of photos, we took on our cycle ride this week, showing part of the cycle route above:
This photo shows the left turn at the high kerb stone opposite 'Villa Tesoro' :

This next photo shows the downward hill to Benimar - if you pan-in you can see the hill all the way down:

Are you still out there Jan? I'm over next week and you could give me a crossbar down that hill.

Hi Glyn, Yes,we are still in Quesada, although at present we are in Granada on a trip with David's coaches.

You would be taking your life in your hands if you came down the hill on my bike though ;) :)

Hope the weather cheers up for you, as its been a bit changeable with a cool wind. The Uk has been better than Granada the last two days - not sure how its been in Quesada ( our little Oasis!!)

We cycled to Guardamar from Quesada yesterday. Using the route above from Quesada to Rojales, where we had a lovely English breakfast in the Spanish cafe 'Charo' in the Centro Social next door to the Ayuntamiento (3 euro). We then cycled the route to Guardamar - on the left hand side of the river going towards Guardamar.

It was a very easy cycle on a farm track, by the side of the river, but it wasn't too bumpy and no cars are allowed except for farm access. We didn't encounter any vehicles on our journey but saw a couple of cars parked by farmland.

The journey takes approx 30 mins from Rojales to Guardamar and comes out at a slightly industrialised area but it's easy to see from the road signs where to go for the town centre. Getting into the town is quite easy - We mostly walked it with the bikes because it was on normal roads.

There are some photos below showing what the route is like:

Turn onto the right hand path under this bridge:

There is a stone path that crosses the river about 25 minutes or so into the journey but it can easily be missed (We missed it and ended up about a further 10 minutes along the route with no way to cross the river to Guardamar on the other side and had to cycle back), so I have taken a photo below of the stone path from the other direction below. There is a sign which can be seen in the photo and it indicates that no cars or motor bikes allowed to cross the path:

Here's the path:

It's well worth a trip but coming from Quesada, for the less energetic cyclists like us, I would say make a day of it. We had breakfast in Rojales at about 11am, refreshments in Guardamar and then had a meal in Quesada on our way home at about 6.30pm.

When we cycle to Guardamar by this route, we cycle down to the marina for lunch and to look at the boats which is an alternative to going into town.

To reach the marina, just keep following the river or go straight on instead of right when you get to Guardamar. It is signposted 'Puerto Deportivo Marina de las Dunas' in orange.

It is a good bike run Jan, thanks for reminding me of it, not done it so far this year.

Hi Laura,
It was the first time we did it and we had a very enjoyable day.

However, we were a bit confused though as when we followed the river at first instead of crossing it at the stone path it looked as if there would be no way across at the end of the cycle route, as the mouth of the river is there and the town Guardamar can be seen on the right of the inlet. Is that the route to take for the Marina or have we got it wrong? Did you use the left hand river route out of Rojales? We did notice there is a path which cyclists were on, on the other side of the river all the way to Guardamar?

Thanks for telling us about the Marina - We may try it next time instead of going into town.
:text-thankyouyellow:

Hi Jan,

It was the right hand side of the river we cycled leaving Rojales.

Quesada to Guardamar Marina along the River Segura.

Leave Quesada by the Arches , turn right and follow the road to Benijofar. In the centre of Benijofar you will come across a cobbled area where their is traffic lights.Turn right at the traffic lights and head for Rojales, once in the centre of Rojales pick up the River Segura where you can see the large working water wheel just at the main bridge, if you look into the river at this point you will see large fish feeding and turtles swimming. Once you have enjoyed the town follow the river all the way to Guardamar stopping on route to enjoy the breathtaking scenery. When the track bends round to the right you arrive at a bridge at the edge of Guardamar, cross the bridge and keep left, staying on the pavement, heading back towards the river and cycle on the wide pavement (as it’s a one way street) until you come to where the road becomes two-way (about half way along) and continue until you come to the barriers at the marina. Pass around them and in front of you is a lovely Spanish Tapas bar “Restaurant Nautical,”which is open all day. After a refreshing break you can either cycle around the marina and along the sea front to the town (additional 4kms ) then double back through the woods to the marina and retrace your route back to Rojales or if you feel you have been far enough just retrace your way back, this time on the opposite side of the river if you want, crossing over the first bridge that you come to, following the track all the way back to Rojales town centre, then follow the road back to Quesada via Benijofar.

Total Distance: Approx. 24 Kms Time: 1 hour ( each way ) Summary: Very easy flat route suitable for all ages and abilities
