Spanish lessons

Spanish lessons

Postby Alisunshines » Tue Apr 01, 2014 9:50 am

My husband and i are keen to learn Spanish now that we live here in Spain. We have done a basic course in the UK but would like to extend our vocabulary and understanding of the language. We have come across many people who teach it one to one at your home etc but we would ideally like to join a class or course as we feel it would be a good opportunity to meet other people. Also does anyone know of any other classes or groups that may be of interest for us to join? We tried popping into the centro cultural centre but the guy on reception didn't have any English and we did'nt have enough Spanish to understand what he was saying.

Hi Ali
Most of the people I know who go to spanish classes are still doing basics after three years and cannot string a sentence together, for them it is more of a social gathering to meet new people, therefore don't expect much from group lessons. You would probably be better off spending an hour in a spanish bar ......listening to the language and feeling it.

Hi Dan,

This does seem to be the case as i popped into Quesada Country club who do lessons every Wednesday and they told me its very basic and repeatative and that they seem to just go over the same things when new people join. Its a difficult one as we want to learn the language ASAP but we also want to meet new people. There is a language school in Dona Pepa i think Berlinguo but we have been told its very expensive! We have also been told that just because someone can speak Spanish doesn't mean they can necessarily break it down and teach it and one person we know did weeks one to one with a translator and are still no further on as their teacher didnt structure anything. When you get a sec private message me your rates and it would be great if you had someone we could take a reference form who you have taught Spanish to. Cheers!

Some of my friends, from the community, go to a lady who hires a room over the Spanglish bar. She does at least two different levels; is properly qualified and can speak several language. I have had lessons in Berlingua, yes they are a bit pricey, but I still enjoy going to their conversation class when I'm over there. It's free to people who are having lessons at the school, and a few euros for those who aren't!! Structure is everything - otherwise it can get very disheartening!

I'm a fan of Berlingua. Yes it's more expensive than others but it's because they are properly registered and pay all their taxes. They have different levels and when you outgrow the group lessons you can move onto private lessons. All of the tutors are native Spanish and they are properly qualified. Why not give them a ring and ask for Anita (she's an English lady who does all the admin). She'll probably suggest you go along to a class free of charge to see how you like it. As Sandra says, the conversation class is good too and you get to meet people from all different nationalities.

I go to the group that meets in Spanglish when I am over here. I am not a beginner, but lack general conversation paractise. Uma is lovely and the class has a pleasant structure but with lots of general conversation around the cafe table. Currently Uma is on maternity leave but I expect she wil be starting up again soon. Ask in the Spanglish bar and they will be able to give you the latest information.

Hi Jennifer,

Spanglish bar is in the Consum area of Dona Pepa. There's an address, map and streetview on this link here:

Hopefully someone else on here may know a place where where people can get together and chat in Spanish.

Go to the school at Donna peppe. It's structured and gives a very sound grounding. There is a cost but you get what you pay for.
