Are Spanish motorways safe from crime?

Are Spanish motorways safe from crime?

Postby DTE » Sun Jan 18, 2015 8:34 pm

We are driving from Santander to Quesada, has anybody heard of any recent reports of Uk car drivers / passengers being robbed of passports, money and valuables on Spanish Motorways. If so are there any particular sections to wartch out for.

Thanks

Hi it's not actually that common but happens common sense really if you stop make sure you are in clear view not in a seclude area if someone tyres to flag you down or wants you to pull over don't unless its a properly marked police car there were reports of someone running into your car to get you to stop, there would usually be two or three people in the car at the time again if this happens get the registration details without stopping and drive to the nearest police station or very public place Service station etc, cover items in the car when at a service station and protect you personal belongings wallet, handbag as though you were on a busy market, just be vigilant at all times. and enjoy your journey over an don't worry as I say these things can happen but it's unlikely :)

I drove down from Santander via Madrid over the last couple of days without any problems but I do have a Spanish car.

I drove down from Bilbao via Zaragoza on my own with an English car in December. Fortunately I didn't experience any problems apart from going off course once or twice.
I think the above is good advice, be aware of where you are don't stop unless it's a marked police vehicle, if you have to stop do it in a public place if possible.
Good luck with your trip.

I hear that most of the incidents occur near the Spain/France borders, so Santander is less risky ...we did it , but 10 yrs ago.
My barber and wife took a quick nap in a service area near Altea, and were broken-into while they were sleeping, and lost passports, money etc. so it's probably inadvisable to do that, esp. in the dark ... rather less risky in daylight.

Be alert to 'suspicious behaviour', but not paranoid!

I have driven this route twice a year, for the last 10 years & have had no problems. Just be aware & be street wise. I only stop in Service areas & try & park the car where I can see it, I never park in a secluded area. There is safety in numbers. If I stay in a hotel I try & find one with secure parking.
