Buying a car for a non resident

Buying a car for a non resident

Postby clancyd1958 » Thu Oct 26, 2017 4:13 pm

Looking for some help! We are planning to spend more time in our holiday home in Quesada and want to buy a car to leave there. Can anyone tell me what paperwork a car dealer or seller would need at the time of purchase?

Regards

Your passport, NIE number and the money (but not cash). They will also ask for proof of address so a padron would be excellent but it doesn't have to be in date (well, the dealer we bought from didn't need it in date). Utility bills, nota simple or deeds would be fine as would a rental contract.

Thanks Marcliff. Does the NIE have to be valid as I understand the certificate only lasts for 3 months? (Even though the NIE doesn’t change)

The NIE certificate no longer expires after 3 months. It's gone back to valid forever.
If you have an expiry date on yours, you need to change it for one without a date but the car dealer will simply cover the expiry date up when he copies it.

I have one of the NIE certificates that is only valid for 3 months and which expired about 18 months ago. I swapped my car for a different one and my expired NIE was accepted without any issues. As a non resident I’m not on the Padron, so the only documents needed were expired NIE, passport and proof of address in the form of the SUMA for my old car.

Hy,

Think about do bring the car from your contry (or other EU Country like Germany). In my Opinion the used cars are much more expensive in Spain.

best

This might seem like a good idea at first sight, but if you’re a Brit then you’ll probably lose money in the long term, because the import costs, headlamp changeover costs and re-registration are fairly high, plus your Car will still be RHD and worthless when you come to sell it.

If you want to buy a Car from Germany or France (or any other EU country for that matter) and important it then you’ll probably need to have owned it for 6 months first.

Thanks Pete, I had already ruled out Sigi’s idea before asking about documents after reading previous advice on forum. I agree with your view entirely.

You can buy LHD cars in U.K. from specialist dealers and they do normally work out cheaper and have lower mileage on them; that's what we did before we moved over here. You will still have to pay for re registering but it is cheaper as you should not have to change your lights.
