Buying and owning a car in Spain

Buying and owning a car in Spain

Postby Jan » Sat Nov 26, 2011 12:24 pm

Hi,

Does anyone know the procedure on buying and owning a car in Spain (as a non-resident, if that makes any difference). If the car is bought from a dealer do they generally help with the legal paperwork or is it just the same as buying privately - where I assume you have to sort out the legal documentation yourself. How difficult is it?

Thanks for any help or advice.

Never done it myself Jan. But the NIE number is your passport to all these kind of purchases and it does not differentiate between Resident and Non Resident.

Jan, we considered buying a used car for our trips over, but felt too expensive
for the following reasons;

  • Used cars are not cheap in Spain
  • Must get with Spanish plates
  • Transfer to Spanish plates expensive
  • Annual MOT, tax and insurance
  • Maintenance costs if used car
  • Keeping at airport costs around 300 Euros for around 7 visits a year
  • Security whilst back in UK

We find it cheaper to get a deal with a hire firm (I use Opencar) for using them regularly thru the year. They meet you at the airport where the cars are kept nearby.

I've bought a car privately, in Spain, in the last two months!

There was the option of going to Traffico - in Alicante - I think or of going through an abogado. I has heard of horrendous waits at Traffico. As I was only in Spain for three days I decided to go through the latter!

The abogado charged €100 for the transaction. She asked for my NIE, Residencia (which I was previously told that I did not need, but which I had to swiftly obtain!); my bank account details, driving licence and proof of identity. She faxed everything to the Traffico department, and they worked out the amount that they would need. This amount was apparently worked out on a sliding scale and so the abogada supplied them with make/model of car; and registration details. The amount payable to them was around €250 based on their sliding scale. The seller and myself split the whole amount between the two of us. We were then given a certificate, to cover us for a short time, for insurance.

Later in the day I obtained quotes from a lot of companies and Linea Directa came in the cheapest for me - fully comp was €360 - which included breakdown cover and lots of other bits and pieces. They sent the insurance documents to my house in England, as requested.

I decided to buy, as when the two of us went it was costing around €1,000 a visit (I have a very tall husband!!)- so after a few years I am hoping to break even and then get ahead!! We bought our house in Spain 7 years ago and have "bought" our car a few times over with the amount that we have paid on rental!!

We are weighing up the pros & cons of either buying a car to leave there, taking our own car over and leaving it there for our 3 separate monthly visits (all within 6 months to stay legal, of course - as we have a 2nd little run-around family-share car in the UK), or continuing to hire.

Due to the cost of hiring in the last couple of years, since we retired and spend more time in Spain, we have tended to only hire for a week or so during our stay but there are times, such as when we would have liked to go to the beach on the spur of the moment, that we really miss having a car.

When we used to go there for only 2 weeks or less it was not so costly to have the car for the whole time but the first and only time we hired for a whole month, it was nearly 1000 euros and we found we didn't use it every day, so we felt it was very expensive to leave it sitting on the drive.

Thank you all for all the very helpful answers, we certainly now have food for thought.

Jan.

Jan,
I used a man called Graham Shelton - he writes a column in the Costa Blanca News. I can't remember the cost but he did everything for us, he knew his stuff. I don't have his details on me at the moment but you could probably find him via the Costa Blanca News website. I would use him again if I needed to.

Thank you Maria Elena for recommending Graham Shelton. With that and Sandra's comprehensive information I have plenty to go on, if we decide to buy a car there. I also understand Rob's reasons against owning a car in Spain and we will have to take those into consideration.

My husband has just told me he's sailing across the Atlantic for a couple of months next spring, which is when I was hoping to take our car over or buy one, so these plans may be on hold for a while but thanks again everyone.

Hi Jan,

Sorry, post not really about cars but about your husband sailing the atlantic next spring , sounds very interesting. We learned to sail a couple of years ago in Torrevieja with Serenity Sailing and do quite a bit of sailing in the Costa Blanca. Does your husband sail round there too?

Hello Laura,
I think we've chatted about this before on the Yahoo site(?). Doug hasn't sailed in Spain, probably because I'm not as keen as him on Sailing, although I have sailed a few times. He sails with his 'boaty' friends and sometimes with the CSSA (Civil Service Sailing Association). He's sailed a lot in the Canaries and on the south & East coast of England. His dream has always been to sail across the Atlantic so he's taking the opportunity next Spring to join a yacht, which is doing the ARC at present. He's going aboard in Antigua and sailing to the Azores via Bermuda. Sounds a bit scary to me.......Bermuda Triangle and all that !!

Hi Jan,
I think you may be right... my memory is terrible! Antigua to the Azores sounds like a long sail, I thought I did well with 20 hours from Formentera back to Torrevieja sailing through the night. I hope he gets good winds but not on the bow!
