Can you have items in the back seat of your car?

Thanks Loners, just goes to show, some do and some don't get pulled. I think Murphy's Law has a lot to do with it; if it's going to happen, it's going to happen.

We drive back to England with two dogs on the back seat and the car was packed, we came back the same and then went back with one dog and lots of items, before returning back again the same way, however we did put a dog guard behind the oassenger and driver's seat to ensure the dogs, the boxes, and us were all protected. We never encountered any problems but would suggest you get a metal dog guard. I too have heard about people getting fined for shopping bags on the rear seats and passenger seats, I guess it depends how much money the police need at that time. Good luck and safe journey Angie

2 years ago we went back to UK for a wedding. We were towing our caravan, had a dog in the back of the car in a cage & had the back seats down with luggage on there between the dog cage & the front seats, but we put a cargo net over the stuff on there. We were pulled over by the Guardia Civil, we think because they could see we were towing a British caravan with a Spanish car as the door was on the wrong side. This is highly illegal. However we were carrying all the correct paperwork on the legal importation of the caravan, so no problems there. While one officer was checking all our paperwork, (ITV'S, number plates & insurances) on caravan & car, the other was checking everything in the car, so he saw the luggage behind the front seats. As everything had been secured, including the dog, they were satisfied & even stopped all the traffic to let us out & on our way! Hope this helps as we were quite nervous about it all but did not need to worry. I think that as long as everything is secured you are O.K., we did not have anything balancing on the back seats.

That's reassuring! Although it could depend on the police at the time, if pulled over, it seems that securing everything in the car so that nothing could come loose in the event of an emergency stop/accident is the safest thing to do and hopefully may avoid a fine.

This is not a law just to raise money ... if you were to come to a very sudden stop, any loose objects (including dogs and passengers!) could become deadly flying objects.
Do it because it could save your lives, rather than to avoid a fine : :)

This forum provides a unique service. We'd never have known about that law and, at first glance, it does sound a trifle arbitrary but, once it's explained, I suppose it does make sense. I imagine too that a handbag on the front seat could attract unwanted attention at a junction or at traffic lights and be easy for a thief to smash a window and grab it. I can't think of any other reason to think a handbag on a passenger seat could prove a dangerous flying object - unless, of course, they've seen mine!

There's a great page on Facebook run by Spanish Traffic Police Officers who post daily on all matters related to traffic subjects. It's called N332. Unfortunately there's no search as in certain fb groups. A search facility is really needed.
This related site is good, http://n332.es
