Can you have items in the back seat of your car?
Can you have items in the back seat of your car?
by Zorro26 » Thu Oct 16, 2014 8:13 am
Hello All, we are driving back to UK with stuff that will be in the back of our car. We have been told, rightly or wrongly that if the Spanish Police see anything on the back seat of your car they will fine you heavily. How the hell do we get back home if we can't take back stuff that needs to go back, i.e. things we didn't come with? Some pals have asked us to bring some bits and bobs back for them. Is this scaremongering or true?

Hi Zorro26,
Welcome to the forum.
I have heard this about bags of shopping but not anything else. I suppose it's to avoid 'stuff' flying forward in the event of an emergency stop or accident so that's logical but never heard of this 'law' in the UK and we all put stuff on the back seat at times. I suppose common sense would say that putting heavy objects on the back seat could be dangerous - Using the seat belts to secure any items and possibly using a cargo net between the back and front seats would be a good idea and may be sufficient to avoid a fine (??).
I saw this on-line that may help:

Unfortunately its very true in Spain, nothing to do with UK laws. If the Guardia Civil see it they will stop you and definately fine you. When in Rome do as the Romans, like it or not. Try going to see the Guardia Civil Officer for clarification in the Quesada Municipal Centre Mike.

I wasn't saying it had anything to do with UK laws, of course it doesn't! - I was just making the point that I had not heard of a law like this in the UK and as it's to stop something dangerous happening, which it is, then in theory, other countries including the UK should have this law too.
'When in Rome' or any country!
Jan.

I was informed by a Spanish friend that even though people have been fined it is not actually a law yet???

Puts a bit of a damper on it if you are driving to and from Spain if you can't bring anything in or out with you. What's the point otherwise? Might as well fly and bring in a suitcase. What about if you put the seats down and use it as a hatchback. Just a thought.

Just have to say, drove back to uk this year,i was very aware of this law of having nothing on seats, loose, but while queuing for the ferry, all of the other cars were crammed to the gunnels,so much so I don't know how they could see out of the windows!!!! I expect they just took a chance, or were unaware of the rules, but we felt we were the only ones in the line that had nothing on the seats, and the dog was safely fastened in also, but next year I shall still play by the rules, just for peace of mind, and not wanting a fine!!
