Car hire or car purchase?

Hi Audbro,
If you want to buy a car here you need a NIE number.
Secondly you mention to be a non resident.
Spanish law says that every person staying more than 3 months in Spain has to apply for his "residencia"
Tax resident is something different.
Many people don´t bother but that is another story.
Get on the "Padron" to start with.
It doesn´t cost anything but means a lot of money for the administration (Townhall) And i mean a lot.
Townhall in Rojales first floor and talk to Miguel.
If you want more information about Quesada (Rojales) Go to José Ramon in our Quesada Townhall Plaza Blanca. First floor. Nice guy , speaks 4 or 5 languages.
Welcome to Quesada.

Hi don,
gosh u know lots, thanks for the guidance, we are still 'wet behind the ears' with all aspects of Spanish life, I don't think we will be in spain more than the 3 months each year but would like to be .
Does Jose Ramon give advice and guidance on aspects of buying property and the legalities, seems such a minefield when you don't know folks or who the good and more importantly bad guys are in this property buying field. Cheers audbro

Hi Folks, also after having been stung by rental companies we decided to buy a sound but relatively old car (2004). We have a contract with a longterm car parking outfit near the airport who deliver the car to us when we arrive and then collect from the airport when we depart. This has the advanatge we do not need to worry too much about the battery as they have to start it to get it to us (:0)
The car is approaching 10 years old so its IVT will after 2015 be due every year but as it is in very good condition I don't see that as being a problem. I agree that the cost of ownership will be in the region of at least 800 a year, we spend around 500 between the insurance and parking so add the IVT and a bit of service...
I do have a question though of you good folks, having only bought the car this year there is one remaining mystery and that is how, where and when does one renew the annual road tax (Suma)

I renew my suma by direct debit. The suma office is on the internet so if you are not going to be in Spain in time to get a dd form they may scan you one. When I first had my car (2years ago) I went into the suma office and paid - and they gave me a dd form. I forgot about it - and didn't remember until I returned to England! It is only a flimsy form - so decided to double check that they had received it - via the internet - and got a message back saying that not only had they received it they told me the amount of money that would be taken from my account, and when!! You also may be able to get a friend to pay for you. One of my Spanish neighbours pays for another one - but not sure what identification etc you would need if you did this.
email:[email protected]
Not sure if they speak English - as sent letter in Spanish

Hello Pauline,
The actual car insurance should always be included in the car hire price as it isn't an optional extra - I think you mean the 'annual excess insurance' which covers the hirer for the extras such as the excess that the hire company charge the driver after damage to the car(which can be pretty expensive!). It also usually covers the hirer for windows, wheels, tyres and undercarriage, ie the external parts of the car and the keys, which are not covered by the general hire car insurance.
As Jon Stead has mentioned, we have had a topic that helps explain it (see the link he has posted above).
