Change Of Driving License

Postby scooby1975 » Sun Oct 30, 2016 11:07 am

Hola,
I've been in Spain for nearly a year now and really should look into changing my driving license to a Spanish one. Does anyone know the procedure for this and also the cost.
Thanks
Mark

First thing you need is to go for psychometric testing. You can just walk into the testing center in Rojales above the flower shop near La Caxia.... that will cost 40 euros each.....

Then you need photos.. you can use the photographers in Rojales for 5 euros...

Then you need to go to the Traffico to get you license..you will need your old license plus forms filled out, psycho test results, photos etc.

As we are not good enough Spanish speakers we used a translator... cost for going to Traffico (twice) and sorting out all the documents etc was about 110 euros each..

They arrived in about 3 or four weeks...

Surely it depends on age and residency status ?

If they weren't residents it would be pointless changing the licences. Anyone changing licence now should have the med test to bring them in line with the Spanish rules. In the past (2 years ago), only if your licence was within one year of expiry did you need the test unless your were approaching 70 but I believe they are now asking for one.
(Mind you, it will probably depend on who you see at trafico, what day of the week it is and if your mother's maiden name ends with r or z. Or depending on the mood of the person doing the exchange.)
But, yes, would agree with having an agent to do it. They will have all the forms and information necessary plus will do the trips to Alicante trafico for you.
We used the chap who had an office just up from the old post office in Calle Los Arcos but I believe he has moved to Benijofar. Cost was less than 100 euro for the two of us but didn't need medicals then.

Hi Scooby 1975 you didn't say where you live but if you are near Gaurdamar there is a medical centre along Main Street just up from town hall on the same side, if you look up you will see the green cross, they do all the work for you no appointment is needed I think they do it 2 evenings a week Tue/Thur just take you recidencia and old licence they do the rest even photo, I think it's about 50 euros.

Yes, you are probably right....

That is why we used the services of a translator.. these people are used to doing stuff like this so there is less chance of a flamingo-up..

I think that's just for renewing a Spanish licence. The OP is talking about changing a UK one for a Spanish one which is not quite as easy.
