Changing UK reg Car to Spanish

Changing UK reg Car to Spanish

Postby LifeOfBrian » Thu Jun 26, 2014 1:01 pm

Can anybody offer some advice please. A friend is thinking of bring his UK registered car over to Spain on a permanent basis.

The car is on a 52 (2002) reg plate. But he wants to know what the cost and would it be cost effective considering the age of the car to re-register here in Spain.

Or would be better to buy a Spanish registered car here instead ? TIA

with the import tax, changing various things on the car and insuring a right hand drive in spain, they would be better off selling in the uk and buying in spain. The cost, dependent on vehicle type may be as much as the vehicle value.

Mind you if you register it within the first month in Spain there are no taxes, so its only the ITV and left sided headlights. Depends entirely on how good the car is, mileage and how long would it be expected to last. A semi decent motor out here might cost 3 to 5000 Euro, so a 100 for ITV and about 500 to a 1000 for new lights, seems cheaper to me. Think about it. Mike

It costs about a thousand euros to register a UK car. This will include registration fees, changing headlights for correct dip, ITV and so on. They also charge an import tax although that wouldn't be too much on an old car.
Speaking of old, I'm not sure you can import a car over 10 years old, you can't to UK unless it's a"classic".

I imported a 4 yo Focus, about 10 yrs ago, and it cost nearly 1000 Euros ... I don't think much has changed.
It may seem a lot for a s/h , RHD car, but I'd had it from new, so knew it had been cared-for ... unlike many s/h vehicles you might buy here (or anywhere!).
I have no problems driving a RHD car here, and still have it!
