Community car for airport runs?
Community car for airport runs?
by dingbat » Wed Sep 24, 2014 8:30 pm
This is a topic that I hope will get a lot of replies.
It costs €70 for a taxi from Alicante Airport to Formentera, & no doubt Quesada. I know the cost to the airport will cost slightly less, but still a lot of money.
Our community has been talking about buying an estate car that we would all pay for (& therefore own) & use it just for our community's airport runs. The cost of running the car would come from the taxi fares we would have paid.
The drivers would be community members so they would be in effect driving their own (community) car to pick up other community members.
The insurance would be for anyone over 27 with 3 years driving experience.
Because a lot of our community members travel to & from Spain several times per year surely this would be enough to run the car on.
The only problem would be if someone wanted to go to Mercia Airport at the same time as someone else wanted to go to Alicante.
If someone sold their property, their share of the car can stay with the property for the new owners.
What does everybody think?

could be a minefield! good idea in theory but if the engine blows up and you get say a 3000 euro bill will everyone stand their corner who would take responsibility for maintaining the car? if it broke down on the way to the airport and you missed your flight who would pay the cost!!

Hi Scubidoo,
Thanks for the reply.
The community commitee would be responsible for running the car.
€3000 devided by 50 people in the communuty only works out at €60 each, less that one taxi fare. €3000 could even buy you another second hand car!
If the car broke down on the way to the airport the insurance would pay for the recovery. If a taxi breaks down & you miss your flight because of it, would you be able to claim the cost from the taxi driver? Good luck on that one!
If the car does break down, as a last resort you could always ring for an airport taxi, a farwe you would have to pay for if you went by taxi in the first place.
Just a thought we had. I was interested in other peoples opinions.

Hope it works, but what if there are more passengers coming over than car can carry?
How will u make sure a driver is alwAys available? Is it legal to do this ?
As another poster says sounds like a minefield. We personally wouldn't chose to do this.
However I don't blame you for trying, hope it works out for you.

or you could start your own taxi service
Also if you are paying 70E you are being ripped off, mind you we have found taxis here to be one of the most expensive things compared to UK

Hi,
You are correct John about 70 being too high, from Alicante airport to Quesada this year(2014) was around €45 to €50. It shouldn't be more. We emailed two taxi company's the last time and one was €47 & another was €45. We travel to Gatwick from where we live sometimes by taxi (about the same distance as Alicante airport to Quesada) and the price is between £30 to £35, so the Spain taxi journey is more expensive. They don't do themselves any favours really as the petrol is dearer in the UK too.
The legal taxi system in Spain is, so I've heard, highly competitive & restrictive. We were talking to a Quesada taxi driver and he said the licences are very hard to come by and cost a fortune (thousands apparently!). They are sometimes, as his was, handed down through the family (eg. Father to son). It seems strange when there seems to be a lack of taxi's around the area but I suppose if you are a Spanish taxi driver you would want it to be a monopoly!

Well many thanks for all your opinions, they were all very interesting as they were various.
If there were too many for one trip in the car, we would obviously do 2 runs. It must be legal as all we are doing is using our own car to pick up some friends from the airport. I would not want to start a taxi service- this is too complicated &expensive as explained in other posts. There are 50 properties in our community several of whom are retired with plenty of time on their hands & willing to drive, so we would not be short of drivers, even for the midnight arrivals, at any time of year.
Again many thanks for all your posts. I thought it would was worth chucking the up in the air to see which way it would fall. Still, worth a try......................

People who own their own car wouldn't want to contribute to a community car.

Great Idea , evenif you own your own car you still have to pay for airport parking. I dont know if you can get any driver insurance in spain . But if you can get it going count me in .
