I agree with most of what has already been said in reply, we have done this journey quite a few times over the last 16 years. A few others things to be aware of are;
  1. On most major roads from Northern France sat/nav will try to direct you through Paris, so we put in towns and cities that will take you around to avoid the city (caught out twice, can be very time consuming and unpleasant).
  2. If using credit/debit cards for the tolls, they can attract quite high bank charges particularly if the toll is low value, we use cash for these. You can get prepaid toll cards which give a discount, we haven't used these yet but are considering for our next trip.
  3. Some hotels offer lock up garages for a fee, saves emptying the car every night.
We have driven many routes, taking a one night stopover (at La Jonquera) and also up to 5 nights making a holiday of it. Our favourite for scenery is through the centre of France (after avoiding Paris) and driving over the Millau bridge. Also driving up via Pamplona, through San Sebastian and up Western France on the return.

Whatever route you decide I am sure, provided you like driving, you will want to repeat the experience.

Good Luck and enjoy.

I have a device on my wind screen that allows me to pass through French tolls without stopping. It reads my number plate & bills me at the end of the month. Not expensive, saves lots of time & some times hassle when paying at the un manned toll booths. If you interested PM me & I will dig out the details for you

Weather you like it or not, its cheaper to drive the whole way,
unless you can get a cheap crossing to Bilbao, or Santander, (which ive never done,l
I looked for next year and its about £800 return from portsmouth.
Newhaven .Dieppe is my chosen route, and I never use pay motorways
from Lemans down to Bordeaux the N10 is almost as good as the motorway anyway,
and nicer scenery, then Bordeaux to Pau, through the Tunnel Du Somport, also spectacular scenery.
for hotels I use booking.com and rarely pay over €40 and have had some brilliant rooms.
make the journey part of the holiday.

I do it is one go. 19hrs from Calais with regular stops. Our dogs are too big and we struggle to find
a hotel which will take us. I share the driving with the wife.

Via Rouen,Le Mans, Bordeaux, Pamplona, Zaragoza, Teruel.

Toll roads all the way. Sanef Toll Tag so we drive straight through the tolls and it bills my UK bank account a month later
Total costs are around £600 thats fuel, Channel Tunnel and toll costs.

The Spanish ferry is a non starter about £400 more expensive and 9 hrs longer for us travelling from the NW.
