My reply from a previous thread (changed Santander to Bilbao)
Bilbao to Burgos. Burgos to Madrid. Round Madrid on the R2 ringroad (toll about €2 ) Madrid to Albacete, Albacete to Elche. Elche then Elche to Quesada. Print out a route on viamichelin.com.
About 9 hours including a couple of stops for petrol/coffee etc.
Toll Bilbao to Burgos is €28.
Alternatively, to Zaragoza, Valencia, Alicante and then Quesada. Slightly longer but avoids Madrid.
Routes with current tolls and times are available on viamichelin.com
Both routes virtually all motorway.

Bilbao to Zaragoza tolls approx 30 euro, toll free after that if you take the inland route from Valencia and go via La Font de La Figuera.

Without being too flippant - buy a sat nav, they will show you alternative routes either with or avoiding tolls, there is no 'best' route only preferences.

It is possible to drive 99% of the journey in Spain, on toll free motorways.
Go via Zaragoza, Valencia, inland to Alicante, no tolls. Put motorways/no tolls into your satnav. If it´s up to date it will do the rest. No tolls and just a bit of non-motorway.

We drove over last year - Bilbao, Zaragoza, Valencia route. The only problem we had, even with the SATNAV, were the roadworks in Bilbao. We could see where we needed to be, but could get to it. Eventually drove about 5km out of Bilbao and came in from a different direction - sorted. The route is predominantly Motorway, just like the /uk in the 60's - clear & no potholes or roadworks. Just keep an eye on your fuel gauge - there are plenty of fuel station, to fill up and have a break (take a flask or some bottles). We did print out the Viamichelin route, which was really useful to have for advance direction. Enjoy the journey.

Danny1967, are you going on holiday, or moving permanently? If Holiday, would it not be easier and cheaper to fly then hire a car at the airport, arrive in Quesada quicker and with less of the stress and hassle of a long drive.

It really isn't a difficult drive, danny1967. Either way is virtually all motorway and the drive doesn't seem that long. The motorways are clear with just a bit of traffic round the main cities. The route via Madrid is quicker and easier but the Zaragoza route is a bit more scenic. There are high embankments along the motorways which tend to cut off you view of the surrounding areas.
We normally drive from Bilbao to the other side of Madrid before stopping then fill up the car and us (motorway service stations are plentiful and the coffee and rolls cheap and adequate). Then all the way to Quesada and, even at my age, doesn't seem too tiring.
Hope you enjoy your new life here and the best of luck.
