Toe-post Birkinstocks are just posh flip flops, the slip on ones are even less secure and probably come under the same rule!

Hi the rule is a bit vague I think there is no law to say you can not wear flip flops but the police can still fine you for not wearing appropate footware so be warned even women in high heals can be fined as you need to be in total control of the car if the police deem your shoes/footware Inappropriate you will be fined and there is no point in complaining it realy comes down to common sence. Bear feet are also a no no.

We checked this on the N332 police website a while back and it's advisable to wear shoes that have backs or back straps on them such as a Sandle with back strap or a normal shoe and the normal style Birkenstock sandle or similar have back strap so are ok. Ladies also wear sandles but they should have a back strap to them, to be safe. Backless shoes or flip flops are dangerous as they can come off and slip under the pedals, irrespective of whether they are allowed or not when driving.
The police can fine anyone they consider to NOT be 'in control' when driving.

Many Spanish men also wear the Birkenstock style sandles in the Summer all the time including for driving.

I checked this out when my husband started wearing them,as I kept advising him to wear his proper shoes/trainers to drive in, but then found out that as long as footwear is not backless then it's considered OK.

I think backless is ok unless you have an accident. Then fined for wearing unsuitable footwear.

If you get a spot check then they will fine you and statistics show that you are more likely to have an accident with backless again this is why they fine you so don't wait to have an accident!
