Driving from Santander

Driving from Santander

Postby Calledali » Mon Dec 12, 2016 7:23 pm

can anyone help please? Is it feasible to drive from Santander to Quesada after a 24 hour ferry crossing. The ferry arrives at 18.30 hours and I will be travelling alone. Route information I have is via Madrid and estimates about 8 hours. Is it advisable to stopover or is it an easy drive at night?

It is feasible but unless your in a real hurry I would stay in a hotel and split the journey. I have done it and it's a better in the daytime.

I drive from the UK direct on a regular basis.I do it in one go with only rest breaks. From Santander I always budget about 8hr with a couple of stops. Easy but boring drive. If your stopping half way Zaragoza is about right

Done it a few times, always with a stop half way, the ferry docks at 18.30 , but depending on the traffic in Santander we have found it can take 40 mins to get out of the place when traffic is heavy, there are lots of places to stay along the route, we normally stop at Burgos,on the way back, find that is far enough for us, then the other half of the trip arriving back in Quesada around lunch time, we never have found it boring, nice to drive during day time to see the lovely scenery etc, so like Vince said much nicer, in daylight so if you not in a hurry, would never rush enjoy.

Thanks to everyone for their comments, I am not at my best on board ship, and the prospect of spending a full day wishing I was on dry land, and having to break the journey from Santander into two days has persuaded me to travel on my usual route via Caen with an overnight in the Pyrenees. Just booked ferry and hotel today and looking forward to the leisurely drive south.

I will be doing this route from Santander next month. The post above states travelling via Zaragoza but I see the route close to Madrid appears to be shorter in distance.
Can anyone advise on the best route please ?
Many thanks,
Gwyn

No problem round Madrid. Good (mainly quiet) roads all the way with the ring road around Madrid. I usually use that route - Burgos - Madrid - Albacete - Elche - Quesada. Ring road around Madrid is a toll but only a couple of euro.
Via Santander there is a 28 euro toll on the AP68.
And I think allowing 8 hours might mean exceeding the speed limit in a couple of places.

I did the journey from Santander around Madrid just before and after Christmas. Its a long slog and we did it in one trip 9 1/2 hours stopping for the dog.Ferry was really relaxing in fairness and very calm.
It's always a pleasure to drive on Spanish roads.
