Caen is a great route, and the ferries are of a high standard with great service from friendly staff.

Suggested route to caen
Valencia via La Font de la Figuera
Teruel
Zaragoza
Huesca
Jaca Hotel Oreol is great and good value, great breakfast, and there are plenty of good restaurants within 5 mins walk

Oloron Sainte Marie
Bordeaux
Nantes
Rennes
Caen.

This is a long day, but the ferry does'nt leave until 10 pm approx, so plenty of time for the journey.
This route is done with only one driver

I have tried many routes, and this I find to be the one I prefer.

Good luck

Obviously you will need to carry a breathaliser kit if driving through France. It IS law to carry them with you and you WILL get fined if not.Suggest buying 2 in case one gets used.

Just to update on the breathalyser in France . . . I went across on Eurotunnel for a booze cruise a week ago and popped into the AA shop to replace my ones that had expired . . . I couldn't see any and the AA guy said that they had changed the regulations in France a few Months ago and it is now only advisory and there are no longer any fines for not having one, so the AA don't stock them anymore as no one is buying them . . .

As has been said in typical French fashion, the law was challenged and correctly taken off the criminal book BUT being France, the law stands but the penalty is zilch. So no need to carry one, or even two in France. Truth is Sarkozy "helped" a friend out who was not doing so well with breathalysers so a law was passed where motorists were required to carry a breathalyser and the friend was out of the woods, so to speak...allegedly.
