Driving to UK

Postby willemite » Tue May 10, 2016 2:25 pm

Hi

We are going to drive to the UK for the first time and would like to know where to buy the following, we have looked on Amazon but they are double the price compared with UK prices. Also, we are thinking of going from Caen, any suggestion of places to stop overnight on the way, we don't mind staying at a few place on the way, make it more of a holiday rather than driving for hours. Thanks

You do not need a Breathalyser kit as there is no fine for not having one and the rest you can bet in Norauto at The Boulavard

We did the journey last week and drove back to uk starting of Friday, left around 9am and drove up to Valencia, then on to Zaragoza, arrived at Pamplona at approx 4pm. Unfortunately my oh took ill at that point and we tried to find accommodation in Pyrynees but without success. I had to take over driving and have to say not having driven the brand new Mercedes rhd car on the opposite side to normal through the Pyrynees at rush hour was not a pleasant experience. Anyhow I carried on until I came across a hotel sign which was at Junction 12 near Biarritz called Inter Hotel (and it can be seen from the motorway) and it was superb and far better than the Kyriad which we stayed in Tours on the way down. I was very pleasantly surprised not to say relieved to find it. It was 80 euros and money well spent. We then crashed until 5am Saturday morning and then drove straight up to Cocquelle arriving about 2pm, onto the shuttle and we're back in the Uk by 2.30pm. Fortunately my oh had recovered Enough to drive another 8 hours to our final destination. Tolls cost about 100 euros each way. Apart from the unexpected migraine I have to say the journey was a breeze and we are looking forward to next time.

Hi everyone

Thanks for all you information which is very helpful, this will be our first from from Spain, did it many times whilst stationed in Germany but then that was many years ago and less traffic. We will look up the route and overnight stops. Cheers

I can recommend Hotel Plazaola, Irurtzun and NH Pamplona El Toro, both are comfortable, clean and convenient for the motorway north and near cheap petrol stations. Both are on Booking.com.

We stay at the first one regularly as it is pet friendly and about 500 miles from here, which is halfway to our home in France.

We find it best to coordinate Booking.com and via michelin. Calculate how long/far you want to drive on via michelin and then put the nearest towns into booking.com to see what accommodation there is in the area.Sometimes planning is as much fun as the trip-enjoy.
