Goldcar

Goldcar

Not sure if anyone saw the programme on TV last night about this car hire company? It got slated over it's insurance policy and also it's petrol policy. People found that even though they thought they were buying an overall insurance package the staff convinced them that their was either no insurance or very little cover. Also, they operated a full tank policy. They were charging for tanks of diesel/petrol which were bigger than the actual capacity of the cars! The price of the fuel was higher than the local garages charged, and if anyone came wanted a car for 3 or more days they were still subject to this full tank charge!

Another horrifying thing was that the programme organisers had put "bugs" on cars that it left with secure parking agents - to see where these cars were stores - and the amount of distance that they had travelled since being left by their owners! This followed reports of owners receiving their cars back in a damaged or dirty state. One company employee borrowed a car every night and drove to his own home and parked the car on the road outside; many of the car parks were shown not to be secure or to have camera fitted. Another real eyeopener. Thank goodness for this investigation programmes.

The one tongue in cheek thing that this programme found out was that it was cheaper to park a light aircraft at airport parking, for one night, than a car!!

I have also rented from Goldcar and never again and in fact it is one of the main reasons for butying a cheap car in Spain. This is of course little different to the low cost airlines advertising cheap flights such as 50.00 one way to find the return flight is 150.00 and by the time you have paid the hidden extras you may as well have flown with a main stream airline. I would be intersted to know which "secure" parking company(s) to avoid at Alicante

We were so badly ripped off by Goldcar that after Auriga Crown shut down we were at a loss as to who to use as they all seem to be pretty bad. A friend of ours introduced us to Lara Cars who i have to say are much more reasonable and totally reliable. They operate a full full system on the fuel which is totally fair and so you only pay for what you use at local rates. Extra drivers and car seats etc are included in the price as is full insurance, the only things not covered are damage to the tyres and loss of keys. For a week or more they are good value but on shorter trips not so much because they still have to pay to have the vehicles taken to the airports and picked up. The whole process is so easy, they wait in arrivals for you with your name on a board take you to the car, take payment and give you the keys and rental agreement. When you arrive back at the airport you simply park up the car and go, you do not need to wait for an agent. We and some of our friends and family have used them about 15 times now and we have been very happy to of found them. http://www.laracars.com/rentacar/

We use Centauro and had no problems , you are charged for a full tank when you collect car , return with a full tank & they refund the petrol costs back onto your card , we have used them for 6 years.
We also had a problem with one car and it was replaced withing 4 hours, all in all a good hire company .Their prices are competative although they are all expensive, once we retire and spending more than a two week holiday we will buy a car .

The other problem with gold car is the long wait for a car at the airport. We have had to wait nearly an hour before and when I picked my daughter up at the airport in May, the queue looked even longer which would be well over an hour I think.

If the queue is long though, you can go into the priority queue and pay 30 euros extra for the shorter queue. Time is money as they say, and not everyone wants to pay the extra.

I've ended up by buying a car - great to have a car for use when you arrive - and I do like the Suma charge as opposed to road tax - I think that I paid €40!!

I leave it on my driveway - and get someone to turn over the engine and to take it for a spin at regular intervals in order to keep the battery charged up. I know some people take their batteries out or use a charger when they go over - but I like to be able to jump into the car and drive straight away. A friend of mine collects/delivers me to the airport so I don't have to use the airport parking companies. I've heard both good and bad reports about them!

We regularly use Aeroautos in Quesada, have recommended them to friends and have found them to be excellent. No extra insurance charges, no petrol charges at all, just pick up the car with 1/4 tank and leave with the same. The price they quote is the price you pay.
In addition they offer excellent and friendly service. Well worth trying if you not sure who to use.
