Hiring a car without a credit card

Hiring a car without a credit card

Postby monkeyboy72 » Mon May 05, 2014 8:06 pm

Hi does anyone know if any of the local car hire companies will let you hire a car without needing a credit card, I don't have one, I only have a UK MasterCard debit.
Thanks

If you take the full CDW insurance with Dickmanns then they allow you to use a debit card to pay. It also means they don't withhold £300 or more from your account with the resulting bank fees and exchange rate penalties. Worth it in my experience. :-)

You can get full CDW insurance for 40 per year less, if you are only doing one trip it is worth it and saves you a fortune if you are doing multiple trips and as soon as you say you have your own insurance they usually shut up about theirs and give you the car with out the usual spiel. Annual insurance usually give you much more cover than doing it with he hire company. Defiantly not worth taking CDW with any hire company in my experience!! :D :)

Can I just clarify that the car will still have it's own insurance from the hire company. The CDW is, with some hire companies, a non-compulsory add on (although it's always advisable to have it).

Where do you get your annual CDW insurance from scubydoo? We have annual excess but always buy the CDW as an extra at point of hire. Would we still need annual excess if we had annual CDW?
:?

To get back to the original topic about not using a credit card - As Laura mentioned Opencar.es - we often use them and always find them good and easy to book on-line. You can always email them before you book monkeyboy72 and ask them to confirm if they accept a debit card, before you decide to book.

I used DoYouSpain.com to find a hire car. I got a good price but they need a credit card, however I don't have one. Unfortunately a company that DID NOT need a credit card was about 200% more expensive .
So my solution will be to sign up for a card before I go over and then cancel it when I return.

I would be interested find out if you tried Dickmans a suggested by bellajanie as she is so sure the are the best without a credit card please let us know for future reference, I don't see why you have to take one out then cancel just keep it for the next time you hire even if you don't use it fore anything more.

Thanks

It is Dickmans funnily enough. I think they were the cheapest that DoYouSpain came up with.
I certainly didn't consider GoldCar; several of my mates have queued for hours at a GoldCar airport desk next to empty Hertz & Avis desks. Having said that it's probably because Hertz & Avis were double the price...
