Items you need to have in your car.

Items you need to have in your car.

Please can you help. I am aware there are several items you need to have with you when you drive in Spain. Obviously driving license and insurance docs and we also have 2 red warning triangles and high visibility vests.
Please can you advise if we also need a first aid kit (if so where is the best place to buy one). I've also read about carrying your V5 document (not happy to do that for obvious reasons).
Is there anything else that I'm missing?

I take it that from your mention of the V5 document, you're d Irving a UK registered car?
If that's the case, then I'm sure you're aware that the car can only be in Spain for 6 months before needing to leave the country for at least 6 months, or being re-resisted on Spanish plates. Because of this, it's a good idea to carry some proof in your car of when you entered Spain - either a ferry ticket, or channel tunnel ticket. If you can't produce this, and the police believe that the vehicle has been in the country for more than 6 months then they can impound your vehicle at the roadside.

You don't need a first aid kit, although I always carry one. You can get them from most pharmacies or places like Feuvert or Norauto.
You don't need spare bulbs either, but once again I always carry them.

You do need to carry a spare wheel, or a repair/inflation kit if the vehicle manaufacturer doesn't supply a spare.
If you need glasses to drive then you need to carry a spare pair.
As well as your insurance documents, you should carry a European insurance report form, plus a translation so that you know what to write in each box.
With Hi-Vis vests, you need to have one for each person in the vehicle.

I am planning to start renting in January 2018 for at least 11 months, my plan was to bring my UK car with me. I am being put off this by my brother in law who has been semi resident in El Raso for almost 6 years. He says you need a left hand drive to enable "safe" driving. I was also

Paul under the impression that after the first 6 months I all need do is leave Spain and then when I return a "new" 6 months begins but reading on here I cannot return for a further 6 months? can I return in a different car?

The 6 month rule applies to the vehicle, not the driver,
So yes, you could return in a different car and get another 6 months.

A few things to look about for...
If you spend more than 6 months of the year in Spain then you’ll be classed as a resident for fiscal purposes, meaning you will need to make a tax return and be taxed in Spain.
Most car insurance companies provide automatic EU insurance, but only for a limited period - usually 28 days, so you may find that although you have valid UK insurance you’re not covered in Spain.
You should carry proof of the date when your car entered Spain (ferry ticket for example) as if you’re stopped by the police and they realise you’re living in Spain your var could be impounded if they suspect it’s been here for more than 6 months.
Your car needs to have a valid UK MOT and tax, so it can’t be SORN in the UK.
