Thanks RogerB, as I've said I've booked it and hopefully won't need to use it but good to know it works.

I am interested in the annual car insurance policy option. It would be helpful to know the experience of folk who have hired a car and told the hire company that you have annualinsurance. It would also be helpful to know how to go about getting quotes for 2 drivers.

Hi,
The Annual car hire insurance is to cover you for the excess that most car hire companies charge in the event of damage to the hire car and tyres, window glass, roof and more(see the small print). As long as the car is covered by the hire car normal insurance including CDW then you don't have to say you have it, you just don't need to take out the optional cover offered for windows etc.

The excess Insurance for Car Hire we use is http://www.insurance4carhire.com/ and automatically covers for more than one driver (at least 2 but not sure how many).

Hope this helps,

Jan

You don't need to tell the hire company that you have your own insurance. The FAQ sheet that came with mine says simply refuse the excess insurance (I know, a lot of them have high pressure selling and it's awkward). It says if you do have any charges, then show them the policy to claim from. If they won't accept it, keep a copy of your bill and send it to the annual insurance policy company and they will deal with the company after reimbursing you for the charges. It covered for 2 drivers.
Touch wood, I haven't had to claim so I don't know if it works but I have refused the excess charges in UK (Hertz UK wanted £136 for 10 days hire and then £114 for excess insurance on top so the £39.99 a year has saved me).

And, yes, I have virtually repeated Jan's post and we use the same company.

I buy my excess insurance through AIG, I have 3 named drivers for €49.99 per year but the policy will cover the driver and up to 5 others
