I didn't realise that insurance4carhire did actual annual insurance, I thought it was only an annual 'excess insurance' they offer and that's £39.99 for UK and Europe (for 2 drivers).

If you search 'excess insurance' or 'car hire insurance' in the search box, top right, there has been quite a lot written about this subject on TalkQuesada.

Yes, Car Hire Excess insurance is what I'm talking about.

http://www.insurance4carhire.com/europe.aspx?refID=2047&subRefID=0&curID=GBP&langID=1&gclid=CMqKm8mz5bwCFdHLtAodNT4Ayg

According to this it's £39.99 for one driver and £75 for two.

Is this a good price?

^^^ I thought the car hire companies didn't actually debit the card but would in the event of a claim.

I assume then, that in the event of damage, say to a tyre, the car hire company would take the cost of the tyre from your credit card and you just make a claim against the insurance that you have taken out and get the "out of pocket expenses" back?

Yes, you are correct on the above Jon. We have an annual excess insurance and I have checked what you say.

It says "If your hire car gets damaged or stolen, you pay the excess charged by your hire car company. Make sure you keep all receipts for your claim. Submit your claim for reimbursement to us within 31 days. We’ll then process it straight away.

It also says that the "policies will reimburse you for damage to the roof, windows, tyres, undercarriage and headlights, which isn’t covered by standard car hire insurance or excess policies. The excess insurance reduces or removes your car hire excess entirely. You should be aware that if you purchase excess insurance from your car hire company it usually excludes damage to windows, roof, tyres and undercarriage, the parts of the vehicle that are most likely to get damaged should you have an accident."

Therefore, if the hire car company do debit your credit card, as long as you have the insurance with the car hire with CDW included, the charges will be reimbursed by the excess insurance.

"CDW (Collision Damage Waiver), also known as LDW (Loss Damage Waiver) is car hire insurance which covers damage to the rental vehicle. There is generally an excess payable if you have an accident or damage the car, even if you have CDW".

* Edited April 2014 - To save any possible confusion this is what it says on the website: "the £39.99 covers you & up to 7 additional drivers named on the rental".

It is only £75 if you travel independently, the £39.99 covers you & up to 7 additional drivers named on the rental. READ THE SCREENSHOT!

That will teach me to read all the preceding posts but, in my defence, this is a fast flowing topic!

I always thought that at least two drivers were covered on the same policy but this statement threw me: "You will only be able to make a claim under this policy if you are named as the policyholder AND the car hire agreement is in your name".

Thanks Guapa - It's put my mind at rest.

Therefore Jon, it seems you do only need one policy for £39.99 if the two or more extra drivers are named on the same rental agreement - Sorry to confuse you in my last post.

No apology needed. Then it seems an even better deal, seeing as how I won't have 7 named drivers. There will usually only be me but my wife says she wants a go at driving over here so I will start putting her on the agreement.

I think I'll take out the £39.99 policy for when we come back out in April.

Well spotted Guapa :text-thankyouyellow:

Well that's that sorted. Policy taken out and effective from next time we come over.

Thankyou TalkQuesda, I didn't know these policies existed.

Happy days!

IMO, yes ....I had to make a £175 claim for a broken windscreen some years ago and they paid-up .... albeit after quite a lot of form-filling!
