Spanish registered car

Postby scotty » Thu Dec 10, 2015 6:34 pm

If I buy a LHD car in the UK which is Spanish registered what should I check out i.e. legal status? Would it need to be registered when driving it back into Spain.
Many thanks

Hi, I bought a Spanish registered car in the UK last November and drove it to Spain. Provided all the paperwork is correct and the car is free of finance and fines it can be worthwhile. The car we bought is a one owner car with full service history and low mileage for less than £5000, the equivalent car in Spain is advertised on dealer sites from between €8500 to €12000 depending on condition and mileage. You will need to insure the car with a Spanish company so as to drive it to Spain. Once in Spain get your solicitor to get the log book changed to your name and sort the taxes. Hope this helps, feel free to ask any questions.

Hi Scotty,
I also bought my Spanish registered car in the UK and this was a stress free change. Make sure you have a copy of previous owners passport and NIE, the Green registration document, itv and the latest suma when you buy. It is my understanding that if itv is not kept up to date the vehicle can become unregistered so save yourself an headache.

Good luck,
Julie

Hi thank very much for your prompt replies. Do you know if I need an NIE number to buy a Spanish registered car in the UK and could you recommend a Spanish insurance company.
Thank You
Scotty

Hi Scotty,

You shouldn't need an NIE to buy in UK but you will need one when registering in Spain. I think the NIE certificate needs to be less than 3 months old for traffico.

I use Spanish insurance next door to Yorkshire linen very competitive and really reliable in my experience.

All the best,
Julie

If you require any help in finding a Spanish registered car in the UK I could point you in right direction. I will be back in the UK on the 25th Jan.

Just one question. If you source a LHD car in the UK and ask it's history the dealer just says (for example)it was registered in France for a time. How do you know that it doesn't have any debts in Spain as you are just told "it came from France". How do you check if it is clear in Spain and if so how much does it cost to do this with just the VIN as it won't have a Spanish reg?

Or do you just look at Spanish reg cars?

Hi,

I would try to buy direct from the owner. If you do go through a dealer it is possible to do a check on the history and if there are any outstanding debts.
If you require any help don't hesitate to contact me.
