[quote="[email protected]"]We swear by Tom Tom. quote]
I've only ever owned one satnav (Tom Tom 920) so can't compare it to others. What I can say is that when I bring it to Spain it does as good a job here as it does in the UK to keep this directionally challenged individual from getting lost in unfamiliar territory. I love that 'get me home' button. The important thing with any satnav is to guard against switching your brain off when you switch the satnav on.:-)

I've had both Tom Tom's & Garmins. Both are good and simple to use - in truth probably not much to separate them. I used a TT for years, but as the updates were expensive decided to buy a new and pretty cheap Garmin Nuvi as read good reviews (only a basic model) & found it did the job well enough and simple enough to use.

Of all of the equipment I suspect that Google maps is likely to be the most up to date, as is continually being updated, even on the phone, there is usually an update once a month or more, which is more than the other services, unless you get a very high end model. With any satellite navigation in Spain, there are still a few holes...as there are still addresses out there, that do not technically exist & will fool anything. I have found it useful if you have something you can put in GPS coordinates in, just in case. That way you can look up on PC before you go and enter in NAV or phone.

Technicians who have to find addresses all day long, tend to use google maps, even though they carry sat nav (also Garmin).

Most of the sat nav equipment as well as google maps - has a 'get me home' type option.

You can also download portions of maps onto the phone and avoid using data, though would need to look up how to do - I know it can be done, just cannot remember how as never needed. Not sure how much data google maps uses on the phone, though would only be concerned if using a lot. It also does use the battery on the phones quickly, so if a long journey - have an in car charger or similar to hand.

We this year bought a new satnav its Garmin from Mediamart
It is excellent and Mediamart set it all up for me
It takes us to the remotest places with no problem and we travelled to south of France to tiny villages again with no problems

If you have an ipad, you can download excellent apps which do the same thing for about 20 euros.

Hi there,

I have used Tomtom now for many years & have relied in it for touring all over Europe by motorhome & car. Make sure that you get the free update for life. If you are planning to visit the UK make sure that your update is for the western Europe as Tomtom, in their wisdom, regarded Spain as southern Europe, & installed it in our satnav. this meant that when we got the ferry to the UK, all the UK & Ireland went blank!! This was fun when we tried to get through the rush hour traffic between Portsmouth & Southampton, then turn onto the M3 only to find that the A43 to Oxford was not signposted from the motorway so you have to guess which turn off you need!! It took a couple of hours to delete the new update & rerun the correct update. Fun indeed! Other wise we have relied on our Satnav which has taken us correctly all over Europe without putting a foot wrong.
Hope this helps,

Dingbat
