Which route from Bilbao
Which route from Bilbao
by Sunny B » Mon Dec 16, 2013 12:03 pm
We're arriving in Bibao on Thursday morning (Yipee!) and can't decide which way to choose to get us to our home in Quesda. Can anyone advise which they consider to be the best, Madrid or Zaragoza? We're travelling with our 2 big dogs so we'll need plenty of stopping off areas. Thanks everyone.

Zaragoza as there is far less traffic and once in Zaragoza no cost on the motorways. Mike

Ive done both recently, I liked both trips. The Zaragoza router had some great scenery but I think I would prefer the Madrid route as I rather the more traffic to keep awake.
Both have stops pretty much every 20/30k's I the longest I saw without a stop was about 70k's.
I just come back but via St Malo, I got to Zara in 10 hours staight, then its about 4.5 hrs from there.
Often I would come off the motorway and drive through a town just to get some strange looks !

Whilst the Zaragoza route is longer in distance, it is shorter in time as no major cities to go around. The Madrid route has you coming off the tollb road at Burgos (fee €28) and then the Madrid ring road and Albacete, Elche. The same toll road takes you all the way to Zaragoza about 3 times the distance for €35 and then Valencia. The approx 300km to Zaragoza will be on virtually empty roads. The Madrid one is also pretty quiet except round Madrid, Albacete and Elche. The scenery, whilst not geat on either route, is marginally better on the Madrid one as at least you see a few castles and windmills whereas the Zaragoza one is pretty bland until you get virtually to Valencia.
Both routes have plenty of service stations (Madrid one a lot more) to fill up and get a coffee and snack. There is also a toll, €2.50 I think, to use the Madrid ring road.
Ive done the Madrid route 3 times and the Zaragoza one once. Not really a great deal of difference except for the initial toll road to Zaragoza which is long and quiet. Only about 20 minutes difference whichever route you choose.
