We went a couple of years ago to the march of Hannibal from Cartagena.
Life was going on 'as normal' with spear throwing practice, slave auction, etc....
Then Hannibal arrived with his army and recruited all the other volunteers from the town and formed a great parade out along the Calle Major. (No elephants, but camels.)
