Postby Martin the artist » Mon Mar 05, 2018 8:54 am

The week leading up to Easter is full of processions etc. as usual.
Here's the programme in Spanish.
(Will try to put up an English version later.)

Hi Martin
Thanks for putting the posting about the processions but there must be others like me who are relative newbys and would like to watch the processions. It would help if you said were they are and the posting in Spanish is unreadable when you enlarge it, a bit more detail would help us newbys!!

Haven't seen the full glossy programme yet this year - I may have missed it - but that includes the translations.

However here is a quick synopsis I've made, and unless specified, the processions all start and finish at the church and go over the old bridge before various routes round some of the old streets before returning.

For the Thursday one, they black out the town and it's quite eerie with distant sound of a fog horn.

The re-enactments on Thursday night/Friday morning & Easter Day are very moving - and after the Easter day one, everyone piles into the church square to see the paseos (floats) that are carried by the cofradias (brotherhoods).

Programme:-

25th March Palm Sunday 11.30 Palm procession
From near Rojales health centre to the church
19.00 Mantilla procession

26th March Holy Monday 21.30 Procession of the flagellation

28th March Holy Wednesday 22.00 General procession
6 or 7 cofradias I think

29th March Holy Thursday 22.00 Silent procession
24.00 Procession to the foot of the cross
From the town centre to the 3 crosses followed by re-enaction of crucifixion about 1 am

30th March Holy Friday 08.00 From the crosses to the church
19.00 Burial procession
All the cofradias

1st April Easter Sunday 11.30 Procession of the encounter in the town centre
Re-enactment of Mary meeting risen Jesus

Where exactly are the crosses? I was just wondering where the best place to see the Burial Procession on Holy Friday might be and where to park nearby.

The 3 crosses are a unique feature of the town situated on top of a hill overlooking the town as marked in this map:

The Friday procession is the longest so goes round many streets as the front then returns the bridge not long after the last has gone over it.
Best to park in the town's car park - Thursday market - and walk into centre.
You'll see the crowds and can try different places as it processes - e.g. start at the bridge and then see them coming back beside the Malecon del Soto park.

All I can say is I really appreciate Martin keeping us informed , he is doing it voluntarily and due to him we are so much more aware of great things going on, eg I didnt know about the summer jazz at the caves until Martin highlighted it ( and it is too cool for words! ) Thank you Martin
