You'd probably have to break it down and put it in a specialized bike carrier- I don't know much about them but I've seen people with them at airports so it is possible.

It's probably cheaper to get it shipped than buy a case for one use?

Yes you can take your bike. Contact the airline and ask them what you need and you will pay extra. You can use a bike box and these can be expensive or dismantle your bike, protect it with padding and use a delivery bike box.

Have a look at the websites sor EasyJet and Ryanair. They allow sports equipment. But also look at Sendmybag.com They do door to door delivery at about the same cost as a suitcase on a low cost airline.

I have taken bikes to and from Spain several times on the aircraft, last time I did with Ryanair it was £50 each way for a sport bag, same for golf clubs, ski equipment etc. I purchased a large bike transporter bag from ebay second hand for about £30. the wheels need removing and putting in the pockets inside the case, I protected other parts with bubble wrap. all in all it is relatively simple. Sports equipment gets checked in at a separate desk and arrives on a carousel just for awkward shaped packages. They do not let you transport any of the small compressed air capsules which I found out to my cost.
