Architectural design & classic car restoration locally?
Architectural design & classic car restoration locally?
by Pedro » Sun Oct 15, 2017 11:57 am
Having owned an apartment in Quesada for a number of years my partner and I find ourselves gradually spending more time here, drawn , of course, by the warmer weather and lovely people. As the colder months approach again we have snuck back out in an effort to build up some 'readybrek' protection for a UK winter, or until Christmas at least!
We were wondering what general opinions might be on the services we can offer, which would enable us to spend more time here, in the warm. My partner is an English (literature) teacher and is currently looking into opportunities with local schools, although she does offer private tuition. Is English literature taught locally?
I work as an Architectural Designer, which entails exploring and developing building project ideas with clients and producing CAD drawings (floorplans) and/or 3D visualisations, for builders to work to.
Is there a market locally for this? The property market seems to be moving fairly well again now, subject to other political goings on. I wondered if I would need to sell my wares nearer to a larger urbanisation; Torrevieja, Alicante, Elche, Murcia etc?
Also, my first career was in classic car restoration, which I still get involved with in the UK. Does anyone know of any Classic Car workshops nearby?
All thoughts and ideas appreciated?
Thanks for your time.
Peter

Aparently there’s a classic car meet in Los Montesenos on the 1st Sunday of every month 10:00am to 12:00 noon. It’s near the hotel at the front of the industrial are. Drive down the CV-905 from Quesada towards Torrevieja and turn right at the roundabout signposted Montesenos. It’s on your right, opposit the Repsol petrol station.
If you get chatting to the guys there I’m sure you’ll soon work-out if there is any demand for your skills. Either that or you’ll end-up buying something!
Pete.

Hi. I think that, unlike many, you have a good skill base to enable you to find work here locally. All too many people come here with skills that simply do not translate to the Spanish workplace, so they end up being another wall builder, or tile layer, because they had once sorted out their grans bathroom, which obviously qualifies them lol.
But your skills should translate well, although like any position here, at least a basic understanding of Spanish language will be helpful, or even essential.
The architect drawing is the same here, using cad systems and, if you have knowledge of 3D rendering systems, you should be able to find some customers locally with builders who pay big bucks for such services at the moment. As a thought, some of the kitchen builders and renovation companies locally might also like this service. I would start with learning basic Spanish, then approach local architect firms with a sample book of your previous work (there’s lots of them), or if you want to do it for yourself, approach small builders, kitchen companies etc. There should be an interest.
As for the classic car restoration, there are quite a few garages locally that do this work and I know they’re always short of good quality staff that know their jobs, espevially welders and fabricators. I’d try Solauto in San Miguel, the garage opposite the entrance to Quesada, Alonso y Hijos and finally, Roger Taylor’s at the far end of Los Montesinos, all of whom do a lot of this work.
Good luck

Hi newchocs,
Thanks for the info, some great ideas. Improving language skills is always going to help and, of course, 'When in Rome...'
Approaching local builders with an existing portfolio sounds like a good plan. The only issue I can see is that not being here permanently might put people off. Having said that, it is entirely possible to produce CAD plans and 3D models from clients drawings / sketches / measurements & photos, as long as everything is well documented!
Thanks for the classic car leads too. Good to have a two pronged approach!
P.S. 4:24am!!?
