Damp spots

Damp spots

Postby Redwoodslady » Sun Aug 28, 2016 2:42 pm

Our new property has been vacant for about 4 years and when we eventually got the keys the damp problem that we had seen in various rooms had worsened. By keeping as much air circulating as possible it is only showing in enclosed areas like the wardrobes and a 'turret' room. The 'turret' is especially bad, does anyone have a simple solution? We wondered if airbricks would help.

I'm sure you will get lots of advice for this but it is as you say an air circulation problem and all room doors and wardrobe doors are best left open. Also see the dehumidifiers idea's in the following link. You can make your own with salt or buy them cheaply in Chinese shops. There is some relevant info on this link here:

Hi we have had this problem. Make a weak solution of bleach and water, use a slightly dam sponge to wipe over the affected areas! The should clear the damp and not affect the painwork! We always leave inner doors ajar when we leave the house and if possible a window slightly open, Iknowthis is not always possible, but the inner doorscleared it for us! Hope this helps!

Once you've cleaned it with bleach repaint with a special paint that has Anti Fungal in it. That what we have done and we don't have the problem anymore. Not sure if they do the paint in colours as we only have white walls, mainly for this reason, so we can see any colour changes.
