Chemo

Chemo

Postby DaisyDoo2 » Mon May 15, 2017 6:17 pm

Can anyone help. My partner has recently been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and is going to have to have 6 months chemo then an unknown amount of time before he will need more chemo. Has anyone had chemo out in Spain and will this be covered on the S1 card if we are living out there. Thanks folks xx

Hi, I fortunately have not personaly had a problem with Cancer, but I know of several people that have and have not met anybody that were not pleased with the treatment, including the medicine to stop you feeling Sick, after/ during the treatment, in England I am told ithat is a lottery, I am not sure about the cards etc, the people I know have lived here on a permanent basis, good luck, hope goes well, just a thought if you dont speak Spanish you could hire a translator and go to the health centre, they should know the situation.

Hi sorry to here .
2 points
1. If you have to have your treatment here you could not be in a better place to go through it.
The after care treatment and check ups are second to none.
2. Phone up your uk dept and ask them if your covered.
I know form my wife's experience that your better having your treatment here rather than the uk.
As the Spanish do not take into account the cost of medication if you need it you get it.
Hope this helps.

Difficult one to answer without any further details. Are you currently resident in UK? Are you over pensionable age in UK? Do you have a place to move to?
I'll assume you're over retirement age and have a place in Spain. You can apply for the S1 from Newcastle which will transfer all your medical treatment to Spain but for the time being. With Brexit coming up who knows what will be covered in the future.
You'd have to get Spanish residency by proving a regular income (pension will do) and having medical insurance (which is what the S1 does). This could take a few weeks and then you could apply for the healthcard and change your bank details to a resident account etc.
Your medical records won't be sent and you would have to ask for a copy from your GP and hospital consultant which you would need translated to Spanish.
Yes, Spanish medical care is excellent. However, if your partner is going to need extended stays in hospital, be aware that nursing care is not what we are used to in UK. Nurses here are professionals who administer drugs, tests and so on. They don't clean the patient, feed them or wash them (on a regular basis). The Spanish system relies on the families to do things like that and will even provide a bed in the same room for the partner to stay in.
To be honest, wouldn't you be better waiting until at least the first round of chemo is completed? Then, after 6 months, the situation would be clearer on all fronts and then you could decide on what your next course of action is.

Of course, I may be totally wrong. You could be Irish and then Brexit won't affect you. You could already be resident in Spain with your SIP card which means there will be no waiting period. You may have family over here to help you out and so on.

PS Hope it all goes well for you and your partner. We have been affected by cancer in the family fairly recently and it's an extremely worrying time.

Thank you so very much for the replies. I have heard that medical/hospitals are second to none in Spain, unfortunately not always the case in the UK. My partner is retired, 67, and has not started chemo yet but it is imminent. This will be in tablet and injection form. We have just put down a deposit on a place in Dona Pepa and are due to finalise in July so this was, to say the least, a complete shock. First thought was to lose the deposit and just not go through with the purchase but having sat on it a while we are going ahead. We had hoped to move over to Spain permanently some time next year so hopefully this is still possible. Your responses are much appreciated xx
