Health care.

Hi everyone,
We are hoping to move to Spain on a permanent basis early next year and we already have an apartment at La Finca Golf. We will be early retirees and will not be eligible yet for UK old age pension.
I note that to get onto the Convenio Especial you need to have been registered resident for one year and that to obtain residency, you need to show that you have private health care in place.
My questions are: Can anyone give me a rough idea how much a years private healthcare might be?
Is this the best way to have healthcare cover until hopefully the reciprocal pensioner healthcare kicks in?
Also, how much is the Convenio Especial at the moment for a husband and wife?

Hi Angela and Stuart,
You are right, to get onto the Convenio especial you you must have been registered as being resident in the 12 months before your application and the cost of joining the scheme is currently €60 month each if you are under 65 and €157 if you are over 65 as far as I'm concerned. There are no exclusion for pre existing conditions.
An alternative meanhwile might be a private medical insurance, while their costs depend on entry age. There are quite a few medical insurance providers available, so the rates and benefits may vary from one to the other.
Kind regards, Alfonso

Hi Angela and Stuart,
My husband and I are in our late 50s, so we're in the same position you. We bought our Health insurance from ASSSA last year, via Jennifer Cunningham insurance brokers. One year's cover, because we were both under 59, was Euros 1700 total, i.e. Eu 850 each. ASSSA has 4 levels of cover and this premium was for level 3. We could have paid by monthly instalments, but in order to obtain the certificate you need to prove cover as part of your Residency application, you have to show a full year's cover, so we paid the first year in full.
I've recently seen adverts from other health care insurers which appear to offer cheaper cover, but you'd need to do a detailed comparison of each to see whether the cover is like for like.
Good luck!
Kind regards,
Kim

Many thanks Kim, your reply gives me confidence that our plans to emigrate are still good to go and that we should be able to find an affordable solution to the early retiree health question! Cheers, Stuart
