Driving in Spain - New traffic Laws

Driving in Spain - New traffic Laws

Postby Jan » Sun Feb 08, 2015 9:08 pm

I saw this article in the Abaco (my Fiscal Representative) Magazine and thought it may be of interest as it highlights the main points from new driving laws including paying fines, Speeding, Drink Driving, Children in cars, Registration of foreign vehicles and more:

I read in a UK motorcycle magazine about an accident by a UK biker in Spain. Two lanes going straight on at a roundabout biker in the left lane. Car on the inside of him didn't go straight on but cut in front of him and off he came.
UK biker was at fault as the Spanish are taught to keep to the right to go left at a roundabout. They keep to the inside and go all the way round on the inside which is the opposite to the way we drive.Since I read this article I now know why they always do this.

Half the time drivers do what they want, I am sure under ITV rules the indicators must not work as you do not usually see them working under any circumstances.

You only need the indicators when you leave the roundabout. The person changing the lane (from the left to the right and exit) has to give way !

I think you mean is supposed to give way!! they don't a lot of the time the best way is just to assume that they will do it wrong and even then they will take you by surprise on the odd occasion!

Hi,
There is a great Facebook page, N332, which is published and updated by Traffic cops here in Torrevieja. It's in English and includes diagrams of how to use roundabouts, videos of traffic, myth busting answers on licence renewals etc. and if you post a question on there they will normally post the answer within 24 hours. I think this is a fantastic initiative.
Hope this helps Sue

I would just like to point out that the majority of drivers on the roads are Spanish.
It never ceases to amaze me the amount of ex-pats who have absolutely no idea of
Spanish driving regulations. Remember we are NOT in the UK. Roundabouts are the
number one cause of accidents because drivers fail to use correct procedures.
Back in the UK drivers are taught Mirror -Signal - Manoeuvre. exactly the same in Spain.
Don't get caught out- be vigilant!! from a retired UK Driving Instructor.
