Information on traffic fines in Spain.

Information on traffic fines in Spain.

Postby Jan » Thu May 01, 2014 7:29 am

Speeding, parking in the wrong place, not having the necessary paper work in the car
(which includes non-residents and holiday-makers), all carry traffic fines in Spain.

Apparently, if the fine is paid within a certain amount of time then only half of the total amount is payable. This makes quite a difference if you are talking about paying 60€ rather than 120€.

Fines can be received in different ways including speed cameras (as in the UK) and directly by police officers who can stop and check any car at any time.

With a police fine, you are supposed to be able to choose whether to pay on the spot or can take the ticket and pay at a local post office or certain banks. You can also pay by phone or use the "Dirección General de Tráfico" website to pay by credit or debit card.

This article by Abaco Advisers has further information which I thought could be helpful:

[quote="Guapa"]Be VERY aware of the implications of speeding, new laws are coming into force this month.

I am always very aware and even though my husband is a very careful driver and aware of his speed, he is also very aware of having a 'back seat' driver in the car (me!). I'm sure he wishes he had ear muffs sometimes! It must be a woman thing because he never says anything when I'm driving in the UK....or maybe he's closing his eyes!

That's ok I saw that. By the way it says clearly in that Abagado article that you can CHOOSE to pay on the spot or later, so its possibly an urban myth that you HAVE to pay on the spot....although alledgedly it's possible that one or two PC's may not know that ;) and who would argue with them in broken Spanish :) but a receipt should be asked for if not offered.

Are you also aware that the police do not have to stop you if you are over the speed limit, they just check your reg No and pop the fine in the post.
Does any body think that there will be plenty of bogus fines issued, all of which you will have no recourse to dispute, since we all know the Guardia
and trafico police to be extremely honest.
Even if you were able to prove that you were not even in the country at the time, they would just say that you must have let someone else
drive your car while you were away, it is a bit like a witness to a bank robbery saying that the robber was wearing a Blue shirt and grey trousers
and if you were unlucky enough to be wearing that ensemble at the time, you must therefore be the thief. (Down to the station for a game of football)

No, I can't imagine that we are really - I think it's just the fear of the unknown and the language barrier.

Our UK police would be in big trouble if they persecuted foreigners or are perceived to be racist in any way but, on the other hand, there can always be bad apples in any sector of authority.

I would like to think that the Spanish police, who must have guidelines like any other police force, are mostly fair and honest if treated with respect.

The stories we seem to hear are the times when, possibly, in a few situations the police don't act in a way we would expect from our UK police, but then again what about the times they do...we don't often hear about those!

Am I being too 'glass half full'?

No, I don't think you are. I have been stopped on a number of occasions in different parts of Spain over the years. I have had my papers in order and treated the officers with respect as they in turn have treated me with respect, on every occasion.
I was once pulled over in Monforte del Cid by two of the sternest looking Guardia you have ever seen, I ended up giving them both a sweet and sharing a joke and a handshake with them after they'd checked my papers.
You reap what you sow !!!!! If you wanna smart arse, you're gonna pay. it's as simple as that !!!!!

We had visitors staying with us this week who, despite our warnings about parking meters near Guardamar beach assumed it didn't apply to where they parked their car. WRONG!!!!!!!!
It entailed driving back to Guardamar town hall the next day to be told there to find the Suma offices, which are down the road and round the corner to pay the fine of 45 euros (50% discount for paying without delay). Having sat in the front office for 10 minutes we were then told to go to the rear office to pay the clerk who had been just sat looking at us through the glass for 10 minutes!
My visitor was given the choice of paying by card there or going to a bank with paperwork to pay there. He paid by card and the whole process took another 10 minutes or so. He was asked to produce id as well as the ticket so worth noting.
Yet another learning curve added to the joys of living in the sunshine. ;)

Hi Jordy,
Thanks for telling us, especially about the ID - Yes it's all a learning curve but everything seems worse when we are out of our comfort zone in a foreign country. My last parking fine in the UK, quite a while ago, was £60 with a 50% discount if paid promptly but it went up to something like £90 if paid late, so Spain isn't that different really.
