Hi all

Hi all

Postby Black » Tue Dec 05, 2017 7:17 pm

Just a quick intro. We (myself and SWMBO) took early retirement, sold the London house and drove over with a car full of "stuff" in June. The rest of our "stuff" we either sold, gave away, dumped or left in storage. It's amazing how much "stuff" one accumulates after 23 years in the same house

We are currently renting a villa in Playa Flamenca and actively house-hunting around Quesada. After viewing many houses I still don't feel as though I've found my dream home, but we are getting to the point now where looking is becoming a chore rather than a pleasure.

So, we have narrowed it down to two favourites, one near the Recorral and one in Benimar. Lots of pros and cons to weigh up, but hopefully we will be settled in our own home soon.

Hi and welcome to TQ. We too rented an apartment in Playa Flamenca for 5 weeks until we found a long term let in Benimar. We loved the urb. but couldn´t get on with walking all the way back up the hill after visiting the restaurants and bars. We eventually found a place that suited us in Torrevieja (not in the main town), nice and flat, on the local free bus route and with shops and bars in walking distance.
We also relate to your story of getting rid of stuff, we ended up with roughly 1 fifth of the stuff we brought. Everyone has their own tick boxes to fill, and everyone has different ideas for living and lifestyle. We hope that you find something ideal for you and end up as contented as we are.

Welcome to Torrevieja.
Why not tell us what type of Home you would favour and perhaps someone may know of the perfect place for you. There are lots of people who simply put a Se Vende sign up and a telephone number without going through an agent. People on this forum live in various different areas and they will be in a position to say if there is an ideal place for sale or indeed coming up for sale.

Welcome!
We live in London (W10) most of the time, but when we took early retirement a couple of years ago we bought a place near Villamartin, where we’ve been spending 4 or 5 months of the year.
I know what you mean about house hunting being a chore after a while, but don’t be tempted to buy somewhere just because you’re getting tired of the process.
Maybe you should decide where you want to live then go knocking on doors asking if they know of anywhere for sale - you might be surprised how many places are.

Pete.

Hi Tom

what kind of property are you after? I have a corner house with a large garden, mostly tiled but lots of established shrubs etc round edges - sun all day. On Playa Golf, very quiet spot in cul de sac and done everything to it!

Welcome Tom and hope you find your ideal place soon. You are right not to rush as moving from one place to another in Spain is very expensive what with agent's fees, transfer taxes, notary and solicitors' fees each time.
We bought our first place in a bit of a rush some 16 years ago. It was just a holiday apartment over in the Villamartin area and we spent a couple of weeks at a time there but had its bad points for living there permanently along with the good points of being quite lively in the summer months. When we decided to move over permanently some 7 years later, we look around for somewhere bigger with a garden and moved to Los Altos in Torrevieja. I think we lost about half what we paid for the flat when all was taken into account.
The Los Altos one was fine but totally dead in the winter months. We did have a supermarket and a couple of other shops nearby but the commercial centre bars and restaurants closed down for months at a time and seemed to change owners every few months as well.
We sold up some 8 years ago (after spending just 18 months there) and again lost out big time on moving and selling expenses.
We moved to Quesada but it took lots of looking to get what we wanted. In our 50s, it was fine having steps to go up, a big garden to maintain and so on. In our early 60s things had changed and we were looking for easy access, easy maintained gardens but the agents kept sending us to totally inappropriate ones. We looked around for what seemed ages but finally found just what we wanted. Walking distance to shops, nice garden but easily maintained, only 2 steps up to the front door (now we are approaching our 70th year that makes a difference) and bars and restaurants within walking distance as well. We have now been here on a permanent basis for nearly 7 years and it is still going great with the only bugbear being the lack of public transport. We moved onto a community so the hard work with the pools and gardens, street cleaning etc is all done by someone else and we just enjoy their efforts. And, in this area, we seem to have a town hall that actually cares and goes out of its way to help unlike the others we had to deal with.
As you are here on a long term basis, you will have time to look around until you find what you want.
Good hunting.

Thanks for the advice, some good points made. We are looking for a 3 bed detached villa with pool, and ideally a garage for my motorcycle (which is still in the UK at the moment). I like to keep myself busy so a decent garage/workshop is a must. Rojales /Quesada /Benijofar is our target area.

We've found two or three more houses that we would like to view, but going back to the UK for a few days next week so they may have to wait until we return.

The strange thing is, I thought it would be my wife who would be fussy but she has fallen for several houses already. It's proving to be me that can't connect with a house. I have a picture in my mind but I'm not feeling it with anything we've viewed so far. We have agreed that we have to time limit the search, and if we don't find the perfect house we will probably have to go with the best compromise.

Interesting, I know W10 well. I worked for RBKC for 28 years before retiring in May.
