another scam

another scam

Postby tonemar » Tue Jul 25, 2017 11:41 am

Was in Lidels Quesada today. Approached by the proverbial women, all smiles, alarm bells, stood back hand firmly on possessions, wife the same.
Robbers, well no, offering to take your trolley back, and of course your euro goes. Watched her approach several people.
You really in a strange way have to admire their ingenuity.

She also approached me at lunchtime today, but when I said euro please, she walked away. On leaving car park we saw her approach another couple, but she seemed to get the same reaction.

Everybody beware!!

Sadly, the occasional, real scam has us all wary of any approach by strangers. Arguably, this lady is no different to the accordian players sitting outside of Consum, but rather than music, the service this lady is offering is to return your trolley for the price of the 50c or Euro you've put in it. I routinely give my trolley money to the ladies who sit outside of Lidl and Iceland in La Marina; in fact, I'd suggest the lady in Quesada Lidl should move her "pitch" to Iceland, where there are no car park shelters - after I've loaded my boot in the searing heat, I'd happily pay this small amount to have her return my trolley for me. Of course, I do appreciate that when first approached, it's hard to know whether this is someone trying to earn a living, or the pick-pocket "huggers" we've recently read about on here.....

Not seen the trolley returners here but they were in several places in UK supermarkets.

I don't think you can classify this as a SCAM. These are poor people that offer a service in exchange for Euro or 50 cents depending on your coin you use. If you really want to hang on to your euro then just say no thanks or use one of those plastic things instead. They will give you one for free inside the stores. Stop being stingy and think about them less fortunate than you. Every good deed comes back to you somehow...karma.

It is a good point but we are all entitled to our own thoughts on this. Whether it's a form of begging or a bit like busking which is doing something for the money (but still a form of begging) or a bit of a scam is our own judgement to make. I got caught by this when a young lad pulled the trolley away from me with a smile, outside consum just as I was loading the car. They get you when you are busy and when you are thinking of no more than putting your shopping away carefully. I let him have the trolley as I was busy and didn't argue (which is what they rely on) but in future I try to only put 50c in the trolley.

Has anyone wondered why there are so many beggars in Spain? We have them in London but elsewhere in England they are not really seen that much. We moan about our benefit system being too soft, which IMO is probably correct, but the other side of the coin is the Spainish social system..are they helping these people in real need, the way they should or could be?

I live very close to central London and see them in London a lot but not in the suburbs and not quite so many in other cities of the UK (when I am in other cities). So not quite so prevalent "all over the UK".
