How safe is your safe?

I have a safe also but it is a bit of more peace of mind but like you say allways got a chance of a break in. I have now got an alarm through direct alarms to a control room as we are away on hollidays for long periods its a bit expensive but more of a deterrent and peace of mind while away.

We can also take pictures from i pad, fone and check evey movement.

I’m torn on the issue of surveillance camera images being beamed live to your phone.

If, God forbid, you do suffer a break-in whilst away on holiday, is it best to know ‘as it happend’ and have the rest of your vacation ruined through worry or, return home, in sublime ignorance and deal with the aftermath then?

When we were young and naive, we moved into a new build property and didn’t change the locks. On a couple of occasions the doorbell rang in the middle of the night and there was nobody there - I guess it was people checking if there was anyone at home before deciding whether or not to let themselves in. After about 6 months we went away for a long weekend and returned to find the front door open and all of our valuables missing.
The thing is, we don’t know how much was taken by the original burglars and how much (if anything) was taken by opportunists who saw the open door and wandered in to see if there was anything left worth taking.

Personally, I’d prefer to know what had happened and be in a position to decide what to do about it. That might be calling a neighbour or keyholder and asking them to check for damage, contact the police, secure the property etc. or making the decision to come home from your holiday. If the property is your holiday home then it may not be that easy to simpy drop everything and jump on a plane, so you may be relying on others to take some action on your behalf - at least for the first day or two.

Cxtrue Peter I feel the same my friend has our keys and there is a very strong alarm both fitted to the house all door entrances and as soon as the alarm is activated they send around the police, so when I am away They will sort it out! Hopefully lol.

We have a safe, sunk into a cement floor, hidden a cupboard. When we bought our house insurance, we were told not to declare having the safe - it would only save us Eu 5.00 on our annual policy and if we were to be burgled, insurers generally use it as an excuse not to pay out on any item which they deem you should have put in the safe. So, we also have an alarm system - and a big dog!
